Rocky Marciano vs Joe Louis - Page 2

I think that the fighters back then had a lot more class than the ones we see today. I think that Joe Louis was being classy and not bad mouthing Marciano. He doesn't really give an opinion either way, he justs says that "I wouldn't say I'd beat him" and then says that it would be a good fight. I don't see that as an admission of him saying that Marciano would beat him in his prime.

They asked Marciano's trainer Charlie Goldman,after Rocky beat Louis in 1951...how Rocky would have done against a younger Joe Louis...Goldman said,"The fight would have been over sooner,"...asked why,Goldman said," ...because you don't come AT Rocky Marciano!"..

That's not true. Joe actually came into the fight in excellent shape for his age(37), and he was the # 2 rated contender in the world. With a win over Marciano, he would get one more crack to regain his heavyweight title.

To be honest,

I think you should actually watch Marciano-Louis before you comment on a prime for prime matchup. It was a good fight, especially the first 5 rounds.

this - they didn't come much classier than Joe Louis and I wouldn't ever expect Joe Louis to put himself over many of his opponents - plus he was by that time very close friends with Marciano - he said something along the lines of it was the saddest day I his life when Rocky was killed - Joe Louis in anyone's world has got to be one of the top 4 heavyweights in history don't forget that - and Rocky is the kind of guy who is in for the fight of his life against anyone in the top 10 of all time and they don't come deadlier for me than Joe Louis so you know this just may well be Marciano's most dangerous potential fantasy fight IMO

bollocks...i can't respond.

it's in his auto-biography...he describes in detail how he has lost all love for the sport by then and has to fight for money and really wants out.

flea (poster on here) has my copy...forgot i lent it to him...can't get the passage in the book to copy and post here.

Then how come Joe Louis was campaigning so vigorously for a title shot? Joe was a top rated contender, in line for a title shot against Charles in 1951

i can't respond in the way i'd like fella....went to grab the book and remembered i'd lent it out...rather than tell you what i remember reading from it..i'd like to scan the pages and let you read yourself.

Prime vs Prime would give Louis a far better chance to do much better than there actual fight but Louis may also get very aggressive and walk into a Marciano bomb earlier....Louis is my # 1 heavyweight of all time but I love the Marciano will,heart & power against anyone but Louis beats Ali, Holmes,Lewis and as much as I hate to say it Marciano and anyone else including the Klitschko's in 100 fights against these men Louis would go 70-30 not a bad record with this company

I've already read it. I am a huge Joe Louis fan. He might be the greatest fighter of all time.
