Default Underrated Superstar: Abner Mares

Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13 KOs) will defend his WBC Super Bantamweight Championship against the Ring Magazine’s #10 Pound-for-Pound fighter in the world, Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno (33-1-1, 12 KOs) November 10 on Showtime Championship Boxing. Moreno is just another of Mares’ tough opponents in a string of world class opposition; having already faced Yhonny Perez, Vic Darchinyan, Eric Morel, and Joseph Agbeko (twice) .

Mares was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, raised in Southern California, represented Mexico at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, won two world titles in two different weight classes, fluent in English and Spanish and ducks no one. Yet, he is little known outside of boxing circles. Mares is more accomplished, proven, and skilled than fellow Mexicans Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. but unfortunately not as well known.

If Mares can get by Moreno on November 10 at the Staples Center, he will likely crack the top 10 Pound-for-Pound list. Top fighters rarely (want to) face top fighters, yet Abner has already said he wants Nonito Donaire next, the Ring’s #5 Pound-for-Pound fighter in the world.

Mares is great, no question.

He has four great opponents fought consecutively. However, I did score the Darchinyan fight to Darchinyan by one point, and only gave Mares the first Agbeko fight by one point as well- certainly altered by the low blows and low blow KD. Agbeko II would be my opinion of his best "win." The Morel win is notable, but nothing approaching close to special.

Low blow. But he should give a good outing against the VERY underated Moreno.

Mares and Ward. If they were loud mouth and controversial, their status in publics eye would be more known. We see many fighters that do it and it works.

Mares is a very under-exposed fighter. I think those who have seen him rate him pretty fairly. This is going to be an interesting fight, I'm looking forward to watching it.

nothing speaks out about him tho.

He's a very good fighter in his prime. When he does beat Moreno and Nonito he will be great. But Mares definitely among the elite. I think he might be on the verge of supers****om remember others take longer than others to get there.

Moreno is going to take that boy to school this weekend.

Probably end up getting robbed anyway though, but still.

Moreno is far more underrated than Mares. People didn't know who he was until he cracked RING top 10 P4P.

This will be one helluva tactical war. Moreno's footwork is probably the best in the world right now. Mares will have to have the fight of his life in this one. **** I can't pick!

Should be getting the exposure Saul gets as its unfair as he's like 3x more proven than he is. TBF, Saul fights at a bigger weight and BM doesn't get its due. People don't understand that FW and BM usually have the best fights and combinations of Speed, technique, and power. Wish him well and hope he beats Moreno but even if he doesn't he still has room to shine.

BTW, missed his last fight against Morel. Worth watching?
