Once again we all know Ali and SRR are unbeatable in hypotheticals.....Ali even wins hypotheticals that he lost in real life, that is how great he is...

Louis whoops him! That won't be the consensus, but still the likely outcome!

Ali wins a comfortable decision.

Respect to reality but Ali whoops him in a hypothetical

Louis barely got by the runt Conn. One of the most overrated fighters ever. Ali humiliates Louis and knocks him out late.

Ali by decision ,with the possibility that both hit the deck.

louis ain't gonna get close enough to hit ali unless he starts moving his feet a lot quicker - he may end up looking slow and ineffective like liston. louis is a good target for a quick right cross which ali had perfected as a counter over the jab. this is an easier fight for ali than v joe frazier.

It's a pick em fight and I generally think many pick their favoured of the two greatest heavyweights of all time to win. Personally Louis by late stoppage would be my favoured outcome, closely followed by a close decision in Ali favour. Either way this fight would be pretty much nip and tuck all the way.

I honestly feel that Ali is the worst style matchup for Louis amongst all the great heavyweights- He's the only one with the feet and the legs to keep moving around Louis, just like Billy Conn did, which opens up his offense and angles, and he can take it when Louis finally catches up to him and gets something off.

Make no mistake; Outboxing Joe Louis was nigh impossible. Outfighting him was tough. But aggressive, mobile fighting, with plenty of punches thrown? That was the ticket, and we have 10 fights or so on film that prove that. Joe's jab was good but defensively flawed, his feet were slow, and his immaculate punch form suffered when he couldn't plant his feet to fire away.

Billy Conn stood him on his head, but got to aggressive and couldn't survive when that got him hit. Walcott did something similar, his movement lateral, but his weapon the right hand over the jab, and he probably beat Louis the first time and put him down with sharp counters, losing the second fight because, again, he couldn't survive the immaculate punches of Joe when he finally got him.

Ezzard Charles completed the trick, but he did so because he shrugged off the rough patches.

Ali's style, his skills, and his CHIN make him kryptonite here. Add that the right hand over the jab, the only thing Joe Louis has that I would call a grave technical weakness, is quite literally Ali's favorite active and passive counter, and I think it just puts him over the top.

Either Ali by UD, similar margin to the Charles fight, or if he's really able to land and push it, he pulls a Schmeling one and closes it late, when a tough Louis just can't sustain anymore.

Ali is one of only 2 guys in an ATG H2H sense I pick over Joe Louis.

Ali UD.

Sure, Louis was a great puncher but Ali had a great chin and Louis's style wont do well against Ali.
Let's not forget that the greats of Ali's era all unanimously said that Earnie Shavers hits hardest, harder than Foreman. Louis' power is not THE threat to Ali.

this to me is actually a very good answer....as cooper had that short throw punch like louis had...its a similar sort of shot i could see louis getting to ali with (the one cooper downed him with)

saying all that...the 66 version of ali was much improved.

Louis' slow feet and easy to hit head, combined with Ali's quick feet, and greater range means this epic match on paper won't be so epic once the two get in the ring. Ali. If Ali pressed it, a TKO win for him can happen as Louis' chin by lesser punchers was proven suspect. If Conn or Farr could stun you, and Braddock can floor you do not have a good chin! Ali hit harder than these guys by a good margin.

Louis might tag Ali once or twice, but Ali's chin and recuperation ability is excellent. Louis really looked bad vs boxers in Conn, Walcott, and Charles. These guys were far less durable and much smaller than Ali was.
I would pick Ali via clear decision, say 10 rounds to 5

Invalid comparisson, with all due respect. It's like saying "Max Schmelling outboxed a prime Joe Louis,so imagine what a prime Ali would do to him"

Incidentally, the talented but still slightly raw 21 year old Cassius Clay who got knocked down by Cooper, was a PRE-prime Ali.

Corrie Sanders didn't one shot Wlad though, there were much more shots than one.
Also Ali isn't a southpaw and doesn't punch half as hard.

Louis' only chance here is catching Ali with a big punch, hurting him, and finishing him. There's no way he'll produce a performance where he outpoints Ali, and he certainly won't be beating Muhammad to the punch.
I'd favor Ali if they were to fight. Wouldn't shock me if there were a few scary moments, though.

Good post,Orriray.

I fully concur with your A,B & C analysis. I firmly believe that Louis would find Frazier easier to beat than Ali did,but Ali found Frazier a harder proposition than he would Louis. I see Muhammad winning a clear, albeit competitive figjht with Joe over the distance. Probably by a four point margin. Ali would have a few hairy moments, but his recuperative powers and chin were second to none.
