I have never met Sugar Ray Leonard, and I love Ray, but when I went to the Hall of Fame in Los Angeles when I used to live in California, he went in the back of the building to sit at the head table so he would avoid the fans near the front of the banquet. I saw him from my seat, but I didn't meet him. I like Ray, but why not meet the fans. I understand it is a bother to see people, but at the same time they would love it.

I had mixed thoughts on when I saw Ray in person. He signed for quite a while, yet at the same time had no problem ignoring people before he began signing.

One thing that did shine though was the size of his ego. He was the first celebrity of his calibre that I've met that had the ego to go with it. Tyson didn't even produce the same ego when I saw him.

Thats why Burt Sugar gave him the handle of:

The EGO Maniacs EGO MANIAC

I had the opportinunity to see him last month for a private signing session, but I could'nt be arsed, his signiture is absolutly atrocious now, i told my mate who booked him that i'll be giving it a pass, he said WHY? I replied that i'll not hand over good gelt & have that cunt de-face my very rare & expensive posters!! If the bastard can't show enough respect for such a rare item such as the Benitez/Leonard On site poster by just scrawling a SRL & not even bother to look at what he was signing then he can **** off

Thats what he did to my mates poster & he was a big Leonard fan, it crushed him! serves him right

I boxed at the same gym as Riddick Bowe in Brockton, Ma from 2008-2010...I have a few stories.

A couple headlines:

According to Bowe, Tyson ducked him.

According to Bowe, Golota is a faggot who gave him longterm problems downstairs

I didn't know Bowe ever trained in Brockton. I met Stevie Collins around 1990 at Petronelli's gym while I was fighting amatuer. He needed sparring so we went up from Rhode Island. Didn't spar though once we found out who he was. Nice guy though, he worked out with me almost the entire time that day.

Damn that awesome.

Burt you ever encounter Max Baer or Tony Galento?

Could people who are just mentioning the names give some more detail like what they were like?, how big were they? the circumstances etc. etc.

For somebody who has never met a champ it makes for very interesting reading.

Wille Pep was a small man, but in a gradfatherly way, not impish. Very pleasant man.

George Foreman seemed monsterously big to me. At 6'4" and probably 290 at that time (the Lewis-Briggs fight) I've known much bigger people, but none seemed bigger in my eyes.

Marvin Hagler seemed very small to me. Only about 5'8" and probably close to his fighting weight I met him in the early 90's at a bar in New Hampsier. He seemed sort of sullen, but he did autograph his IBHOF hat and gave it to me.

Steve Collins was cool, probably around my height (5'10) and around the same weight at the time (roughly 175 to 185).

Winky Wright was very friendly. Met him at the old Cedars steak house in the Foxwoods casino. He was bigger than I thought he would be. Only about 5'8", maybe 5'9" but very thick.

Vinny Paz is always friendly when I see him. He would always give the amatuers pointers in the gym and be encouraging. A small guy though. No more than 5'7" and not nearly as big as he looks on television.

Weird about Hagler from pictures and video of him in the ring the untrained eye would think he was monster big, appeared very powerfully built, big head, thick neck, wide back etc. Everyone who has met his seems to say he is actually quite small. As for Foreman always heard he was a behemoth and it's easy to see why .

Awesome that you met Pep, cheers for the insight

Mercer- Funny guy, especially when speaking of Morrison making him fart with body shots
Carlos Ortiz- Just an all around happy and joyful fellow
Ruben Olivares- I knew I liked him when the first time I met him he was drinking crown royal right out of the bottle
Vito Antuoufermo- Very intimidating looking guy, but he's actually very friendly and will chat for ages.
Marlon Starling- Kind of quarky, but an all around great guy.
Olivares is the man I want to meet and share a few drinks with.

No MM ,Maxie and Tony were a bit before my time, but as a tyke I knew about them and their escapades... One memory of the colorfoul Max Baer remains with me...About a month or so before his fatal heart attack Max Baer VAULTED into a ring to be introduced before the main event bout seen on out little screen tv.He literally catapulted himself over the top ropes
into the ring...Dressed in a suit with the WIDEST pair of shoulders ever on a fighter Baer looked the picture of good health...But looks are deceiving and one month later Baer suffered a fatal heart attack alone in a small hotel..He at the autoposy had a congenital heart condition predestined for a short lifespan...

Supposedly, Baer called the front desk and asked for a doctor when he had his heart attack.
He was asked if he wanted the house doctor.
Baer replied "No, I want a people doctor".
