Default Gary Russell Jr needs to step up to progress as a fighter

I have taken a big interest in this lads career. His talent excites me greatly. The way he has been brought along since turning pro has been excellent up to now. He's been really busy and gotten plenty of rounds under his belt and the time to step up the competition is now. Continuing fighting guys on the level he has been fighting for the past year will be to his detriment at this stage.

He'll be a pro three years this January and it would be a fitting time to have that first real noteworthy fight of his fledgling career. Someone like Elio Rojas would be an ideal fight for him next. I think he's ready to take the big step.

I think he has more potential than that idiot Broner.

Ponce De Leon just won a title @ featherweight.

it would make sense for him to be next for Russell. both are with GBP and it should be a good showcase. he's more than ready for any FW out there

make it happen

Think you're overstating a little there. I think he's ready for a big step up, but the likes of Caballero, John, Juanma and Salido would be too much for him at this moment. I mean, he hasn't fought anyone close to contender level. Those guys are seasoned world class fighters. Someone like Rojas would ask questions of Russell Jr without being overly risky. He needs to fight someone like that before he mixes it with the big boys.

He's not holding any belts and still young. This is not a canelo scenario , the kid has been properly managed. Stepping up and doing is job.

Insane speed. This kid is a monster in the making. Rigo would duck the kid!

I love this kids fights, his speed is top in the entire sport right now. I hate to say it but I see him having a chin issue.
