I think to beat Valuev you need size and punching power more than either boxing skill or speed. Louis, Liston, Foreman, Frazier, Lewis, and Tyson probably all have the strength to really hurt Valuev in a way that Ali, Patterson, Marciano, and Holmes don't. Marciano while known as a great puncher was still a cruiserweight who beat up on old light heavyweights. In all likelihood he doesn't have more power than Ali who was 215 with average power. Ali has the speed and durability to win on points, but not enough to knock Valuev down or out. Same goes for Holmes. Patterson would just get knocked out. He's about Marciano's size but doesn't have his punch or chin.
Also, both Klitschkos would smoke him. A young Evander Holyfield outpoints him. Riddick Bowe was big and strong enough. James Jeffries was as big as the Klitschkos and Max Baer hit ridiculously hard while being about the size of Ali. Earnie Shavers, Ike Ibeabuchi, David Tua, Andrew Golota, Tim Witherspoon, Michael Grant, and Frank Bruno also could have done well against Valuev, so you don't necessarily need an all time great. If David Haye and Ruslan Chagaev could get the job done then those men could have too and probably better. |

It mainly depends by Valuev's age: his gigantism caused him a premature ageing, but a physically conditioned Valuev, the Barrett one, not the zombie that faced Haye, beat them all, with Lennox and Foreman the only ones with possibilities to win (Lennox pretty high possibility); Tyson would have been disqualified

Marciano is too small and would feel 320 pounds on his back the whole fight, he wouldn't last. He was no superhuman. He wouldn't get hit much but his legs would collapse after a while because a 190 pound guy can't carry an extra 320 pounds while boxing. Patterson is Marciano without the power and chin, his speed would be pretty useless here. (Atleast against a "prime" Valuev). Little bit simplified but Patterson has no chance. I'm sure both Tyson and Tua can hurt him. frank Bruno from the Lewis fight would brutalize him, Bruno was a very powerful puncher and unless he scares Bruno, Bruno has the tools. Golota would lose by DQ or something. |

Well he lost to Ruslan Chagaev and was arguably given gifts against a 45 year old Evander and faded John Ruiz. That being said, I think does rather poorly against the men on that list.
