Unhappy Six months and it still hurts.Lest we forget Johnny Tapia.

I know this thread will be destined for a quick trip to the back pages of the General, but it was six months yesterday that we lost one of my all time favourite fighters, the one and only Johnny Tapia, and I just wanted to pay my respects.

I hope all that stuff about him being at peace is true, because it never makes me feel better about it,and I'm only a fan.

Never forgotten Champ.

And I love this photo because he seems happy;

Hi mate,

I can't believe it's been six months!

I first started watching Johnny in around 1998, and I was absolutely fascinated by him. What a life he had, and what a fighter. I remember his fights with Paulie Ayala, and I'll never forget when he came over to England, around ten years ago.

Funnily enough I was clearing my spare room out the other day, and I came across some old boxing magazines. I've got an old poster of him from an old K.O. magazine from 1995 I think. I can remember reading about him, but like I say, I didn't really start watching him until about 1998.

Thanks for the videos that you've uploaded. I'll go and look at some more on youtube.

What a guy!

Regards, Loudon.

He seemed very happy towards the end of his life, always very cheerful and always had a smile on his face.

May he rest in peace.

I hope you're right Magic. It'd be nice to think his pain had lessened in the end.

Thanks to everyone who responded.
Still don't think Johnny gets the respect he deserved though.

So much to say about Johnny. He had some great moments in the ring, but his biggest drama was outside of it. He will be remembered by this generation of boxing fans for being the complex character that he was.

Like Magic pointed out, he seemed to finally be happy with his life by the end.

I like to think he gave his wife and kids a hug and had a smile on his face when he went to bed the last time. He left too soon, but on a high note. To me, it's almost like he could finally rest easy enough to put down the fight and cross over.

Probably because the anticipation of it was so damn long. It's hard to believe he made it to just six months ago.

Hopefully a deal of that "extra" time was more positive than we know.

It makes me sad seeing him against Barrera.
I don't know why I take it so bad when it's only a boxer I was fond of,but I think of an interview where he was talking about how he's nothing without his wife and would die without her.
****! I really shouldn't be as sad as I am about Johnny but there you go.The Froch victory over Bute was a genuinely ATG boxing event for me,but 24 hours later this news kicked me right in the balls.
Sorry to seem like a sap guys but although I got into Johnny quite late in the day,he had a special place in my (boxing) heart.
