my roughness and temper, and the fact I kod an alltime great in his last bout and only ko loss.. But I made amends trying to save someones life.

Yep, Bummy Davis. Who had the best left-hook I ever saw from an orthodox position
[left hand extended]. Bummy came from a" shady " family whose brothers were
associates in the Brownsville mob. As a fighter Al Davis kod 46 opponents with that lethal left hook, most famous was his tremendous one round ko my dad and I saw at MSG
when Bummy a 1-8 underdog flattened Bob Montgomery in the first round. All of the crowb went GaGa at the knockout and 1 month later my dad, uncle and I went to see Bummy take on the tremendous Beau Jack at MSG. Well in the very 1st round bummy's
left hook caught Beau Jack ,and Beau Jack shaken for a second recovered and hit Davis with everything for 10 rounds, and Davis brave as hell took the beating...Bummy was the only fighter to ever ko the BELOVED Tony Canzoneri in 1939 in Canzy's last bout.
Bummy was hated for this ko. After Davis retired from boxing he sold his Gin Joint to a guy. One night a few weeks later Davis visited the bar late at night when 4 armed gunman stuck up the bar and Davis protested that "leave the guy alone, he just bought the place". The gunman said "shut the f--k up "and Bummy kod the guy but was shot a few times by the other two gunmen who the wounded Davis kod. But the last bullet struck Davis in the neck, and though mortally wounded Bummy ran after the gunmen
until he collapsed and died on the sidewalk, a true hero...The 4 gunmen were apprehended later on. Not long after I passed the bar Duddy's on Remsen Ave in Bklyn NY...Bummy and Rocky Graziano were two pods in the same pea, and 2 tough S.O.Bs...

To think you were living close to all these guys and watching them train and fight Burt is mind boggling.

One of the best stories I've ever read was W.C Heinz's BROWNSVILLE BUM, about the colorful life 'n death of Al "Bummy" Davis.

It personifies the expression, "You live by the sword, you die by the sword"
