On thursday night i was getting a lift home from football training when the hatton pbf fight came up- I explained why pbf won etc but people still said they expected hatton to win.
tonight we were in the pub and the oakey haymer fight came on. i said during roumd 1 the guy in the black trunks will win (this was to keep it at the non-boxing fans level).I was ridiculed as the other guy was "taller, bigger and looked better". oakey won. My question is, does it piss you off when people argue until the cows come home about fights when they know nothing? I am still pissed off. Last edited by Bummy Davis; 01-23-2007 at 09:23 PM. |

Thats the most in-depth boxing conversation I have ever had with the average bloke in the pub, & the reason I stick to football conversation, cos when you try & talk boxing its a pointless exercise. Cos even if they know fuck all about the sport, they will always try to act as if they know more than you Its a boxing thing, dont ask me why people who know nothing about the sport seem to think they are experts on the noble art. |

this is a common problem.
i met a load of geezers who had travelled to vegas for hatton mayweather, they tried telling me that mayweather had never faced a puncher like hatton, or anyone as strong and skilled i tried explaing that whilst i felt hatton had a chance (which i got a bit wonky admittedly) he was by no means the biggest puncher mayweather had faced, nor the strongest. and definately not the most skillfull, they just continued with their claims and told me they were betting big on hatton to ko floyd early... i hate the 'man in the pub' boxing fan |

That is why football is so popular because the game is so expansive. What with different clubs, histories, expectations, amount of footballers and transferes ect. Evan when you are talking to a complete pleb about the game you can easily change your topic to something easy to comprende like "that goal was good", very simple stuff but when you talk to a non boxing fan about boxing you can not get to the simple dynamics of the fight.
Best conversation boxing wise I had in a pub was before christmas I was with a mate sat near a couple of old guys (60's or something) and I was talking about a fight I had seen on sky night before and this old guy butted in and started talking about boxing in his day. Very cool guy, I can not remember his name but he was an area champion and gave a fantastic insight into an age I know little about. |

It is bloody annoying.
Anyway, I forgot to add this last night (it will make you laugh) but on thursday in the car home from footie training after the hatton-pbf chat one guy said "have you seen that enzo mac, he is bloody good". I said he had been in the ring with hand-picked not so good boxers and the example given to me of how good he is was the bobby gunn fight. Unbelievable! While it is good that boxing is back in the spotlight conversations like that sometimes make me think that i would rather nobody watched boxing unless they know about it. |

i've actually watched a few fights on tv recently. Yes I have. Hatton's fight and jones's last one.
i was watching with two guys who hadn't boxed and was constantly telling them how the fight was going and what was going to happen noext. Strangely i was correct half the time and they now think i am a complete boxing analyst and ask me really dumb technical stuff like 'is it better to jab, jab straight right or jab hook?' ![]() non-boxing fans should stfu until they have watched enough to know about styles, tactics and moves. |

For me it's the same as the F1. Just because we now have a popular British driver everyone seems to think they know about F1. I'm all for new boxing fans but when they talk as if they know it all it's just annoying. I hear people at work saying things like "Joe's gonna destroy Hopkins" when I know they've never even seen Hopkins fight & propbably watched Joe twice. I even had some idiot saying he hopes "Calzaghe KO's Hopkins then calls out & Mayweather KO's him too".
