He underwent two surgeries in LA hospitals during the preparation period. I believe one on his knee and once he had a herniated disc in his back.

It was during one of those short stretches where Rahman was looking pretty good, and combine that with Vitali claiming injuries, he didn't want a piece of the Rock.
Of course in hindsight, the idea of Vitali avoiding Rahman seems ridiculous... but backing out of a fight 4 times is almost Povetkin-like! |

He was scared shitless of Rahman. After faking a couple of injuries he asked WBC if he was allowed to fight Brock and then Rahman. He got a no, hours later he was injured again and then retired.
