According to Wiki (which is not the most reliable source):

"and during a brief amateur career that spanned less than a year, he won several amateur tournaments, including Golden Gloves. One of his victims was Olympic Heavyweight Champion Ed Sanders."

Yeah, I've seen mini bio's on Liston, and all of them have mentioned his brief but accomplished amateur career.
