I don't know enough about Greb to rank him on my pound 4 pound list.
What can you tell me about him that would help me out. |

Well he beat 18 fighters, who at one time, were world champions at either middleweight or light-heavyweight. Only man to beat the great Gene Tunney.

In terms of sheer depth of resume he is second to nobody with the possible exception of Sam Langford. Whatever he was on I want some of it.
Harry Greb’s resume among the middleweight champions is off the scale. It is so far ahead of his nearest competitor as to make comparison difficult. In his hectic career he beat the following names. Among the Heavyweights Gene Tunney This lineal heavyweight champion never lost to a heavyweight or light heavyweight and was never KOd yet Greb beat him up so badly that he had to be carried back to his dressing room. Tunney called it the only real beating I ever took. While officially Tunney won four out of their five encounters the newspapers of the day tell a different story suggesting that Greb also won the second and fourth fights. If this is true then Grebb should be 2, 3 or 3, 2 vs Tunney. Tommy Gibbons One of the greatest light heavyweights of all time. Gibbons was the No2 ranked heavyweight contender when Greb beat him and due to fight Jack Dempsey for the heavyweight title. Bill Brenan Brenan was a top heavyweight contender who gave Jack Dempsey a competitive fight and was leading on the cards going into the twelfth round before he was knocked out. Billy Miske One of the heavyweight divisions best kept secrets. He gave a prime Jack Dempsey two very close fights. Gunboat Smith Held the white heavyweight title which carries more weight in my book than any modern heavyweight title belt. Charlie Weinert Beat Jack Sharkey, Luis Firpo and Gunboat Smith. Weinert was ranked No4 by ring magazine the year that Greb beat him. Jack Renault No 6 ranked heavyweight contender Qinton Romero Rojas No 5 ranked heavyweight contender. Among the Light Heavyweights He holds nine wins over lineal champions at this weight Tommy Loughran One of the top 10 light heavyweights of all time and one of the elite group of heavyweight contenders who have held wins over four lineal heavyweight champions. Maxie Rosenbloom Fast and slick with one of the deepest resumes of any fighter in history. Jack Dillon A wrecking machine of the light heavyweight division who beat many top heavyweights. Battling Levinski Mike McTigure Jimmy Slaterey In addition to these names he beat great light heavyweights including Kid Norfolk One of the greatest light heavyweights of all time ranked No 3 by ring magazine the year he fought Greb Jimmy Delaney Highly avoided ranked light heavyweight puncher ranked No 8 by ring magazine. Young Marulo No 8 ranked light heavyweight contender Among the Middleweights He beat the following lineal champions Mickey Walker One of the greatest middleweights of all time ranked No4 by the IBRO Tiger Flowers One of the greatest middleweights of all time ranked in the top 15 by the IBRO George Chip One of the forgotten great middleweights of history with a very deep resume. Al McCoy Johny Wilson Mike O’Dowd He beat the following title claimants (think of them as belt holders today). Ed McGorty Frank Mantel Jeff Smith Bryan Downey Other notable middleweights Greb beat include Mike Gibbons One of the greatest middleweights of all time ranked among the top 20 by the IBRO Jock Malone World ranked middleweight contender Allentown Joe Gans World ranked middleweight contender Ted Moore World ranked middleweight contender |
