I think Abril's performance against Rios is getting blown out of proportion and people now think he is some master boxer. He is average. Rios is pretty basic to figure out, straightforward slugger. He is a relentless machine with frightening power and that makes him dangerous h2h and lets him compete among the elites, but he isn't some unsolvable puzzle. The fact that someone boxed him silly doesn't make the person Pernell Whitaker. Abril got legitimately outpointed by Hammerin Hank Lundy, and by the mediocre Breidis Prescott (although that one was closer). He isn't some master technician. He spoils a lot and has quick hands and a great chin. That's it. He's much worse to watch than some other guys who get criticized but don't seem to receive as much praise (Miguel Vazquez, Anselmo Moreno, Carlos Molina). I can easily see Abril frustrating Bogere and not letting him land clean while getting in enough counters to rack up points...but no way is Bogere an 11/4 underdog. That is crazy. Bogere is a limited prospect, but he is very good - unbeaten with a non-padded record. The oddsmakers and those seeing this as some mismatch are suffering temporary insanity and need to realize that some of us have seen Abril on nights other than against Rios and therefore aren't swept up in this legendary mystique that has sprung up around that performance. |

In case anyone tries telling you Abril got robbed against Prescott:
Prescott --- Abril Landed 144 --- 95 Thrown 449 --- 516 Pct. 32% --- 18% ...and he didn't against Lundy, either. I was there. It also wasn't televised so anyone who tells you they saw it - unless they're from Boston like me - they are lying. |
