Man that is sad!? Heard something about George Bush mistakenly announcing Nelson Mandela's death - was kinda hoping this might've been put up by mistake?? Aaww shucks sounds as tho maybe accurate tho? Very very sad news gutted by the news don't know really what to add but very sorry about this - one of my era gone too soon

He was a very exciting fighter, tested positive for HIV in 1996 and did little to help his self in regards to his health... died 17 years later, just imagine if he had taken better care of himself.

When he knocked out Quick Tillis and Pinky Thomas (both in the 1st round), he looked awesome. Showed a lot of heart vs. Joe Hipp, The Truth Williams, and Razor Ruddock... winning all 3 by KO after taking much damage.

The Duke lives fast and died young. He left his mark on boxing. I always wondered how his career would have turned out if he did not get ill, as he signed with Don King.

With all the news about his health deteriorating lately, it was just a matter of time. He was an exciting fighter and looked like a good fella. RIP Duke

This does not appear to be confirmed. The report of his death appears to generate from one site - "mmadirt." All of the other sources that "document" this reference this one, questionable, source. Until confirmed by reliable sources, although superficially plausible, it seems to be highly suspect.

RIP, Amazing I recall him for his role in Rocky V than what he did in boxing lol. Yeah he fought Foreman and Lewis, and was a alpha champ, but I still think his role in Rocky V was great. Tommy Gun was a pretty good villian, not up there with Clubber Lang or Drago, but he was fun. I did think RockyV was a good film.

just overall sad story. feel sorry for his family. can't stand the headlines saying he was a former heavyweight champ but whatever. they should just say he beat foreman. RIP.

Awful news.

Can someone explain how he was able to get sanctioned for 2 boxing matches years after he tested positive?

HIV should be a career ending diagnosis in boxing?

This is what happens when you don't have a national commission with uniform rules. Morrison found some state with lax rules that didn't give a shit and basically wanted to make money off of him. I think it was West Virginia, or some other hillbilly location.

A federal commission would prevent this kind of nonsense.

Then he'd have gone outside the United States. There are plenty of ATGs who spent their entire careers outside the jurisdiction of such a proposed federal commission. [Carlos Monzon only fought once in the States, his defense against Licata.]

In theory, a federal commission might seem like a wonderful idea to some, but if implemented in the United States, it could well be the final death blow to a sport which began its downward spiral with the demise of the championship distance. FIFA certainly never needed American participation to thrive. Neither would boxing.

RIP Champ. Such a shame for Tommy to die at such a young age.

He had one of the most devastating left hooks along with Tyson and David Tua in the 90's.
