Default Your favourite referee

Always admired Mills Lane.

Must of been a tad concerning for him when he had to disqualify Tyson for the ear bite.

The man also had some nifty footwork to put a lot of boxers to shame !

Mills Lane was far too concerned with his own notoriety.

Steve Smoger was good, I thought.

Yep, good call.

Let's some close exchanges take place without all the breaks.

Didn't like Steve Smoger myself. It stemmed from him reffing the fight between Lance Whitaker and Lou Savarese. Whitaker dropped Savarese during one of the earlier rounds and Smoger is counting over Lou, when he got to about '8' (I should mention he was wearing a microphone) Lou is making no motion to get up and you can hear Smoger say, "OK, come on get up" before he says '9'. He had no business doing that. A ref has to be impartial. Personally, I always liked Harry Gibbs. Sometimes he'd get his point across heavy-handed if he had to and he was to the letter. I recall him DQ'ing Colin Jones when he clipped Curtis Ramsey after dropping him to a knee. Of course, he's not without his skeleton in the closet. The only time I saw him let things get out of hand was the Zarate-Gomez fight. If the fight took place in London I believe he would have DQ'd Gomez, but I think he was intimidated with the blood-thirsty fans of San Juan.

Lane is my personal favorite as well. In my opinion, he was the best ever ref. He, very much unlike Joe Cortez, was actually "fair but firm."

I am also a very big fan of Smoger. In my opinion he's one of the 3 best refs in the game today, along with Kenny Bayless and Tony Weeks.

Lane did let the exchanges go and didn't change the flow of the fight at all. Guys like Joe Cortez and Richard Steele tend to break the fight up too much.

Savarese-Whitaker, the knockdown is at 23:40. Listen to Smoger coaxing Savarese up after the count of '8'. Bad form by Steve.

Bayless. I enjoyed a lot of refs, personality-wise. I loved to hate Cortez once he went from a normal ref to a useless, floppy, slobbering old walloper (and looking like one too). He's my favourite love-to-hate ref. Bayless is just this intense guy who is dead-set on doing the best job he can. He takes pride in being a top-noch referee, I think. I figure him the best too, from his time, anyway. And he'll admit if he messes up a call. He just comes across as a stand-up guy, totally conscientious professional and I get a kick out of his intensity. Me and a poster named Boggle made it a bit of a running gag, the intensity.
