Default Chavez was more popular but IMO Ricardo Lopez is the greatest Mexican ever!

Dude retired undefeated half his fights were title fights, defended his title in other fighters back yard and was the consummate boxer puncher, he could do it all and had it all. Sure he never fought carbajal or Gonzalez but what he did was establish a better legacy and ledger than both. He absolutely hammered hall of gamer saman sataurong...spell check....and beat slot of good guys and made it look easy. The Alvarez wars solidified his greatness showing grit when skill wasn't enough and past prime

It is an unpopular opinion, but I agree...

His case would be stronger if he had defeated either Gonzalez or Carbajal...But he's hands down the best straw-weight in history and the division he reigned over did feature a handful of quality fighters.

yep you helped me make my point....popular....one is more well known the other was the overall better fighter...people talk about how long Chavez went undefeated but dude doubt alot of nondescript fighters...it's guys with waaaay less fights who beat more champions and or hall of famers....Mayweather, Pacquiao, Jones Oscar.....Chavez was great but a Lil overrated.....he had some skills but punchers or action fighters are. Always overrated
If they were the same size Lopez would walk all over Chavez, Marquez, Morales and Barrera dude was that good people need to watch the fights and stop following consensus opinion

I don't think he's quite as accomplished. Skills can only be celebrated at the level their tested.

I believe he beat like 8 or 9 world Titlist....a slew of top ten contenders. Over a dozen and a half and defended his titles more than anyone outside Joe Louis and Holmes I think....won titles at two divisions.....nowadays people put to much into weight jumping their are a million belts. Titles are harder to keep than win...any fighter will tell ya that

God, Finito was a brilliant, brilliant boxer. But I agree with Bogotazo, he's not quite as accomplished plus the minimumweights always fall short to greatness.

Yeah, he's at the bottom of the top ten for me amongst Mexican fighters alone. Chavez's skill set (and defense in particular) is actually underrated these days. Taylor (x2), Rosario, Ramirez, Camacho, Lockridge, Mayweather (x2), Haugen, Laporte combined with his long host of other accomplishments and achievements is plenty enough to be #1 for me.

If Rafael Marquez had fought the same level of opposition, I think he'd have retired unbeaten and looked as impressive as Lopez did.

He was extremely talented, but unless you prove it at a high level, there will always be question marks. Great fighters don't have questions marks hanging over them, even if they do have losses.

Finito was one of my favourite fighters of the 90s, but you can't seriously rank him above Chavez. If you compare their top 5 wins, there really isn't any contest.

Alvarez, Sorjaturong and Grigsby were excellent wins, but in the ATG stakes it is a pretty thin resume at the top end, especially considering that he spent the vast majority of his career in a single division.

The fact that he didn't fight Chiquita or Carbajal, or indeed venture upto 112 to face any of the titlists there, does affect his all-time standing.

Certainly one of the greatest Mexican fighters ever, but there are legitimate reasons why most don't rank him on the same level as Chavez.

Not fair that a legacy takes a hit for not jumping weights Marvin Hagley an d Carlos ....Holmes and Louis weren't in the best era but are top 5 at their weight

I plead mostly ignorance regarding Azteca. I've never looked into his career enough beyond a quick glance to give him a fair assessment at this point. I honestly don't know anybody who has, maybe Drew.

lets be honest, he fought ALOT of laughable typical WBC title fights
guys with records like
4-0 (yes 4 fights)
25-19 (yes 19 losses)
6-0
10-2-1
9-3-3
14-3
14-0
7-3
11-4

people on here cream themselelves by looking at a number of title fights and an "0"
lots of garbage on here...LOTS...so the best champ ever at minimum weight but thats about it...probably couldnt name the 2nd best ever ...thus my point

Chavez beat far better opposition in his unbeaten run of nearly twice as many fights.

It's a shame the bigger fights eluded Finito partly cause of King, partly cause of timing...I don't think he would have been bested by anyone from 105-108.. cept maybe an on fire Chang.

Lopez is an absolute treat to watch
