Michael Watson v Joe Calzaghe

Always liked Watson's style and i would favour him in a close fight.

Joe would be the busier fighter but i think he would catch a few counterpunchers to get his attention.

Every likelyhood Calzaghe touches down once or twice here as well.

Thoughts ?

I like Calzaghe. He was a class above IMO. Maybe though - maybe - Watson does display a bit of a style advantage.

However, I'd describe Watson as schooled rather than a deluxe counter-puncher. I think he would need to flash Calzghe more than once to get near a decision here.

Yeah, i see where you are coming from.

I may be putting too much into the Robin reid fight where he gave Joe all he could handle, although Calzaghe did improve after that.

the Watson that fought the Eubank rematch makes this fight very interesting on the scorecards.

the Calzaghe that fought Brewer, Lacey and Kessler would also make things interesting for Watson.

The big difference between the two is that Calzaghe, other than his awkward southpaw style, would be the fact that Calzaghe could change tactics mid-way through a fight.

Not many fighters can do that. To see what I mean watch the first six rounds against Kessler then watch the adjustments down the stretch.

Calzaghe on points, close though. Joe was an elite fighter in my book, didnt prove it enough but it doesnt change the fact.

It's nice that you've spoken to him, but how many times have you heard that form a fighter before Calzaghe puts them in the meat-grinder? They all say that.

Joe Calzaghe had great recuperative powers, so he might last the distance. I think Watson wins a clear decision over him and puts him down at least once.

Watson would be far and away Calzaghe's best opponent, Old Hopkins included in that.

Watson is the technician of the 2, Calzaghe very physically gifted although Watson is too. Watson has similarities to Kessler but is much more of a fluid boxer with a superior defence so he'd do better than Kessler

I think it's a close fight 7-5 either way, I may lean towards Watson, very underrated, so is Joe on these forums really

Yeah, I know.
Still, when you've been hit as hard as Watson's been hit, and hit people as hard as he has, it must be kind of comical watching Joe's cuffing technique.

I don't think Calzaghe ever beat anyone like Watson, nor as good as.

I think that's definitely a reasonable thing to say, though I do think that Hopkins was a superb win for Joe - and even a prime Watson boxing old Hopkins up at 175 is a bit of an unkowable.

Hopkins had both Pavlik and Pacal in his future. These were two very good performances. I don't think either of these guys was as good as Watson, but I don't think those fights were that close, either. Certainly Pavlik was a one-sided thrashing.
