Just watched this fight for the first time in awhile earlier tonight. Not much of a fight actually, I read in Shaver's book that he told Norton at a press conference a few weeks before the fight "KENNY, I'M GONNA DESTROY YOU!" and Norton was visibly intimidated. Well Earnie was right and the only time I ever saw a Black guy's face get reddened without being cut. I can see why he's considered the hardest puncher in history.

Norton was winning that fight up to the knockdown. The establishment wanted to keep him out because they knew he could beat Holmes in a rematch and Shavers couldn't.

It was essentially no different than Wach/Klitschko when he landed that one good punch. Klitschko was never in any real danger there and neither was Norton. Wach is just a bigger Shavers. Except they didn't STOP THE KLITCHKO FIGHT AND CALL WACH THE WINNER!

![]() That "source" enough for you? ![]() *sigh*...I guess now you have to post up a picture of some poor, lost, mustacheless soul grieving with his two young children in the middle of the road just to please the cold-hearted sumsabitches 'round these parts. It makes me ill. Violently ill. So violently ill that...that I...that I just want to punch someone's mustache off!

Norton went down twice, and said in his bio Going the Distance that Mills Lane rightfully stopped the fight.
I do agree that Norton should have had a rematch with Holmes, I have a Big Book of Boxing from 79, and Ali actually picked Norton to beat Holmes in a rematch. Unfortunately Shavers prevented that, too much raw power for Norton, couldnt fight backing up. they could have fought 10 times and if Ken even made it to the 3rd round I'd be suprised. The only worse opponent than Shavers would have been Sonny Liston or David Tua, I'm not including Foreman or Cooney. |

It is. It absolutely is.
He wrote about it, you know? How it affected him and all. It's one of the various stories he covers in that book of his, "The Night Earnie Shavers Punched the Mustache Off my Face & Other Stories." Quality, quality writing in that one. A tear-ripper. |
