Default Josh Barnett: "BJJ is not a Fight, Boxing is"

Josh Barnett ‏@JoshLBarnett
Boxing is a fight. 1/3 of a fight maybe but still a fight. To me for something to be called a fight it must involve striking your opponent.

Josh Barnett ‏@JoshLBarnett
Just overheard, "How many fights did you have today?". The answer is none. You've had zero fights today. Doing BJJ is NOT a fight.

Josh Barnett ‏@JoshLBarnett
Such a proud victory. RT

@TheErikHammer @JoshLBarnett well I just heard "sweet I get a medal because my guy did not show up."

Trying to get a rise out of the mma forum? You will have to do better. Most people around here won't care that you are saying bjj is not fighting.

Those quotes are taken out of context, and are referring to BJJ style tournaments and submission grappling. Still, I'll bite. BJJ is also not mma. The major architects of BJJ, the Gracie Family, may be the greatest impetus for the creation of mma; but they are not the reasons for the watered down version we have today. That is all due to trying to grab fans with little to no fighting knowledge, and sell the product in new areas. Still, mma is closer to a real fight than any other form of competition.

I know it looks gay, but just watch this video. It is part of a BJJ instructional series on how to deal with the guard in a no holds barred situation.

This is an example of what this looks like in an mma bout:

Is BJJ about fighting, or not?

As a standalone sport I would argue that boxing is more of a fighting sport than BJJ.

In the context of MMA, BJJ is a skillset that forms only part of the overall MMA skillset, just as boxing does.

Not getting a rise out of anyone but coming from a veteran such as Josh, its a little surprising to hear. He comes from a catch wrestling background so I'd have thought he'll be pro grappling.

Not really, as Catch Wrestling is a fringe art in the grappling community.

Catch Wrestling is a little known commodity and some practitioners are trying to take some of BJJ's thunder. I do not mean to say this in a condescending tone. When you are the smaller show, you try take from the bigger show. Barnett is part of this movement, and gives the movement some legitimacy.

Good and ***y clip for mma, but Sperry didn't explain what to do if a buddy of the guy on his back runs up behind Sperry and tries to bum him. Sperry was wide open for it, to say the least. I mean, what if he was nekkid? Is there a follow-up instructional clip?

Are you looking for more to jerk off to? Sorry, but that is not my expertise. However, the internet is wide reaching. I'm sure you will find something.

the sport of BJJ...does not produce the same mental reaction in those doing it...if I am getting ready to roll, I get a little bit of butterflys, but its more like the butterflies i use to get before I would run at track meets in high school....they are the butterflies of wanting to perform well. When I go to box, even spar....its different, the knowledge that someone is about to try and smash me in the face makes me feel a different kind of nerves...the same kind of nerves one gets if you have to street fight someone. I think that might be some of what Barnett is saying. Now if you had some strikes to BJJ....or if you were doing it to the point of broken limbs, rather than tapping than I am sure it becomes more of a fight.

Sparring in BJJ and sparring in boxing is a great example of that. I'm never any kind of nervous when I roll in practice, not blue belts, not black belts. But when you have a guy who's 230lbs in front of you and he wants to punch you, yea that'll get your blood flowing.

BJJ is not a fight.

I've heard assholes in gyms claims they've had "fights" because they entered grappling tournys. So retarded.

****ing boxing sparring is more of a fight than that. Give me a break.
