Watching the Nigel Benn special on Ringside on Sky Sports last Wednesday, Benn said Bob Arum had planned a show down with Benn and Sugar Ray providing Benn took care of Iran Barkley in the first defence of his WBO middle-weight title.
Of course Benn tore Barkley a new arse hole which prompted Sugar Ray to tell Arum that he was no longer keen on fighting him. I always had respect for Sugar Ray but I never had him down as a chicken. |

No need to spit your dummy out just because one of your US fighters lacked the balls to mix it with one of ours.
Maybe Tyson got the idea from Leonard by ducking Lewis until Lewis caught up with him? |

Leonard was a cherry picker after the Howard fight he retired and decided if he was going to box again he would make careful choices on who his opponents were going to be

If true then yeah, it's technically a 'duck', but one I can't blame Leonard for. Arse end of his career, against a dangerous younger guy like Benn? Risk vs reward don't add up.

Leonard definitely cherry-picked after Hagler.
Still managed to beat undefeated versions of Benitez, Hearns, Kalule, a 72-1 Duran, and the physically larger, undefeated-for-11 years Hagler before that. |

Leonard was past his best in 1983 and had one fight in four years. I'd say Hagler held most of the aces when it came to prime and sharpness. And whilst mature chestnuts are on the menu, why don't we bring up the old,"he ducked Pryor" tune? Of course he cherry picked after Hagler. It was a farewell tour.Even top names cherry pick these days. No one was pretending it was a prime Ray,going for the P4P top spot.He knew he was a shadow of his prime self. Not one big name US fighter felt the urge to bring Benn over because he was a huge TV name and guaranteed earner, and anyone can list dozens of fights that were apparently "agreed" that never happened. Ask Mike McCallum. And the guy(s) who chose not to fight him was no ducker. |
