Think Ward was upgraded to 'super champion' when he unified with the WBC. Magee was interim champion, and when Kessler beat him he became the 'regular champion'. Obviously they now have a new interim champion too.

Bingo. Ward is the Super Middleweight champion of the world. Froch and Kessler aren't, but does it matter in this fight? Not in the slightest.

Well said, Ward is the champ. This is a great matchup between two of the top contenders.

Ward has the Super WBA title but i think he had to vacate due to injury meaning he couldnt defend.

Magee was regular champ and Kessler took that off him.

So this is a unification between IBF champ and WBA regular champ.

As there is no longer a super champ (assuming Ward has vacated) i believe they will upgrade the winner of this fight to super champ.

Meaning the regular title would be vacant for someone else to fight for it.

There is also an interim title but dont know who has that.

Very complicated but i think this is how it will work. This is still a normal unification fight between two alphabet titles. Ward is still the SMW champ but Kessler and froch are both world champs and both hold versions of the title.

the WBC title has been stripped from Ward and he has been installed as Champion In Recess.

He is still the the WBA "super" champion and the Kessler-Froch fight I believe will also be for the "Super" title.

Basically, Ward doesn't hold any belts, because he doesn't fight very much and isn't a very good poster boy for any of the sanctioning bodies. The fight is for the IBF and WBA titles. Isn't 'Super Champion' essentially the equivalent of the WBC's 'Champion Emeritus'?

I'm fed up reading 'Froch isn't a champion, Kessler isn't a champion' bullshit posts. The fact is, Ward has fought a whole 9 or 10 rounds since DECEMBER 2011...AND HE AIN'T FIGHTING ANY TIME SOON!!!!!! He is the champion of fuck all. If Manchester City didn't turn up for the Premiership this season, they wouldn't still be the champions come May, just because they didn't compete, so therefore no one could beat them! It's professional sport, you have to compete to be relevant.

Froch and Kessler ARE champions because they took the fights that Ward wouldn't take, fights people thought they couldn't win, and went out to prove themselves. They are proper fighters, and champions, both officially and in the broader sense of the term.
