Default Re: Dave Boy Green vs. Ricky Hatton @ Welterweight

Dave was a real terrier, and terrorised more than a few boxers who were trying to use their skills to evade confrontation, slow the pace, and pinch points, Dave's snarling aggression, and Ïndustrial" Muck-Spreader overhand right, and not bad Jab, eroded quite a few wills, but it was noticeable that in the upper class, be it Price, Palomino or a faded stracey, they didnt fold quite so quick and in fact gave Dave all the fight he wanted, Dave was a Volume saturation puncher, a "Biffer" if you will, The problem for him, in my opinion against Ricky is that Hatton is much more Precise in his punch Placement, and Movement, and i could see him operating within the Arc of Daves Slashing Punches,

Ricky was not a great Puncher at Welter himself of course, but his Defence and Targeting was better, And his Left hook to the Body will do Dave no Favours at All, Dave does not Bring Finesse to Matador Hatton, he comes Looking for Ricky...and i think Ricky is more than Happy to accommodate Him, and it would be ferocious, but as the rounds go by, i can see Ricky's Compactness, and as stated, Precision in the Left Hook, taking a toll on Dave, I think we might well see a Late Stoppage for Ricky, His stamina would match Daves, Particularly if Ricky has taken some of the wind out of Dave's sails with his more cultured left Hook..

Two passionate Marauders...but i think its Ricky who has that little extra precision, and his determination and Stamina will not be found Wanting.

Outstanding matchup. Can see Ricky trying for phonebooth warfare while 'Boy' comes forward behind that pressure jab and slinging the muckspreader. I like Green but not by much. The weight is difficult. Hatton was prime 140 and a small welter and Green was a big Jr. welter and primed at 147. But wherever they would meet the fans would be the big winner. Awhile back on the board we fantasised on the greatest separate 15 rounds we had ever seen. Greatest 1st round, greatest 2nd round and so on. My greatest 7th round I had ever seen was Dave Green-Andy Price. It's on youtube so check it out for one of those 'holy crap' type moments we've all had in boxing.

Scar - what has always amazed me is how Dave stayed upright from those couple quick succession flush Hooks of Price - Bang on target...in the 9th round ! - in those moments Dave truely rivaled Linda Blair in the Head Swiveling Stakes !! Area 53

I'll go for Green at light welter and even more at welterweight. Both fights would be wars though.

Pretty amazing how Leonard banged Green out and aforementioned Price, early.

Price was a lot better than being remembered for a ko1 against Leonard. Wins against Palomino and Cuevas prove that. Like you say though, a very impressive win for the up and coming Ray Leonard.

I wouldn´t say a wide decision, but I agree...I would take Hatton...

How do you see Leonard-Hatton going at welterweight?

The Green that fought Palomino, Price and Stracey would be far too busy and strong for Hatton at 147, though his peak was even briefer than Ricky's.

Just compare Green vs palomino to Hatton not looking physically up to it against the ordinary Collazo.Palomino would have crushed Hatton after 2-4 ugly rounds imo.He was getting tattooed and consistently beat to the punch by Green for decent stretches.

Ugly fight, not a lot of quality punches landing, but Green's sloppy persistent jab on the way in and better range should see him get off first.

It would be close at 140, but i still prefer Green's greater physicality and awkward volume to Hatton's slightly more refined approach.Ricky's best advantages technically are in the footwork area and this isn't a footwork sort of fight where Hatton can use his half-steps and slides to close in against a boxer type or a flat slow footed pure puncher(where Green might just barge straight in and get caught with something big), he's hardly going to be controlling range against Green and he's not that much better defensively, especially up close.Ricky throws shorter punches and nicer hooks, but isn't really any more accurate or sharp with his punches.Has too much of a tendency to jab\hook the grab, which would not work too well the way Hatton did it against a busier mauler. He's no Ottke or old hopkins.

He'll just get outworked and muscled about at times imo.Wouldn't be surprised if Green has turned it into an ugly maul with Hatton on the ropes by the last 3-4 rounds.

The Stracey win alone should make Green the favorite here IMO. That's far more impressive than anything Hatton did at 147 IMO. He also gave as good as he got against Palomino before finally being flattened by a desperation hook.

Hatton may have been quicker and technically better, but IMO he wasn't durable enough to hang with Green through the middle and late rounds.
