Default Marcos Rene Maidana vs. Ed Paredes

This is apparently a possibility for April 6th. They mentioned it on Solo Boxeo Extra on UniMás (formerly called Telefutura) tonight.

They are ranked #2 and #3 at welterweight by the WBA, respectively.

Paredes has co-headlined on FNF a few times, and headlined on Spanish language programs like Solo Boxeo and Boxeo Telemundo - but he is yet to really make inroads with the mainstream TV audiences here at home in the USA. He vows (recent article on the Scene) to knock Maidana out cold. He does have heavy hands despite a low KO percentage, but that boast seems ambitious.

The skilled boxer-puncher holds notable victories over Antwone Smith, Vivian Harris, Antonio Pitalua, and Joey Hernandez...but was schooled by Carlos Molina and once stopped by a journeyman (though he later avenged it). There are some asterisks there also in the W column, as both Harris and Pitalua were very old while Smith was a green rookie when Paredes beat them. His most legitimate victory is over "Twinkle Fingers" Hernandez - who's gone on to scoop up a minor WBC bauble and become a passing fair domestic contender, but looked only so-so in his ShoBox debut against James Winchester last November. Paredes and Hernandez had previously fought to a 10-round draw in which Paredes knocked him down midway but didn't finish him. In the rematch he started faster and wrestled off clinching attempts, and obliterated Twinkle Fingers in the 2nd with a massive counter hook on the chin.

Maidana's campaign at 147lbs has been a mixed bag, underwhelming in his loss to Devon Alexander and then looking somewhat improved but still a work in progress against Jesus Soto Karass. (and then beastly against Angel Martinez, FWIW) He is incorporating more jabs into his ****nal, turning over body shots instead of slapping them, and focusing more carefully on footwork. He doesn't seem to pack quite the same wallop at 147 as he did at 140 but his technique is vastly improved making him perhaps more dangerous than ever.

Ironically, while trainer Jorge Rubio has been encouraging Paredes to focus more on hurting and finishing opponents (and encouraging him to plan on the knockout against Maidana) Roberto "Grandpa" Garcia has done the opposite with Maidana in trying to temper his old wasteful brawling instincts and transform him into more of an economical and patient boxer.

This would likely be an eliminator for the chance to face Paulie Malignaggi for the belt.

For now.

I'd be interested in seeing Malignaggi vs. any of his top 3 contenders (Chaves, Maidana, or Paredes)

Actually those are all mouth-watering.

Malignaggi vs. Maidana
Malignaggi vs. Paredes
Malignaggi vs. Chaves
Maidana vs. Paredes
Maidana vs. Chaves
Paredes vs. Chaves

The first three have a bit less possibility of a KO (due to Malignaggi's superior defensive movement relative to the others, & excellent chin) but would still feature plenty of action with nice styles clashes.

The latter three, damn. One punch could change or end it any time, either way.

Thanks for posting clips IB, I'll take a look when I get a chance. Always important to learn a little something about those flying under the radar

If Paredes does come in trying to make it a physical fight and hurt Maidana, we might actually see Maidana try to work his jab and pick his shots to take advantage of it. I'm eager to see Maidana on an upswing again so I look forward to a fight with Paulie.
