Default Re: Jack Dempsey VS Michael Moore..two versions

Moorer didn't fight like a southpaw; he liked to move to his own left. And, after the wars with Cooper and Stewart, he seemed gunshy, hesitant to throw his left hand. That may have been ok against Frans Botha, but it would not have worked against dempsey. Dempsey would have stopped him in 5-7 rounds. I just watched the 2nd fight with Holyfield, and how well the 'technically superior' high guard of Moorer worked in close...he ate uppercuts like Holyfield ate jabs.
The other option, Dempsey vs the LHW Moorer would have been very exciting to watch for as long as it lasted but, again, I think Dempsey would have beaten him. Moorer has a better chance here.

what I intended to say (and maybe PP too, I don't know) is that the war Cooper initiated with his inside fighting and power punching mauling, trying to negate Moorer's assets, is probably what Dempsey would aim for, hence the Cooper fight gives a good idea how a Dempsey-Moorer match would unfold

bit more ripped looking..although old style photos tend to not show definition well.

his left hand was a foot note anyway next to his right as far as power is concerned

NO, because straight left will usually land before a left hook in an exchange. Look at all of Manny Pacquaio's best wins, they're over guys who focus on their left hook, Barrera, Cotto, Hatton yet it's the guys with A Class right hands who had the best success against him, ie Marquez and Morales

Left hookers always move to the left to set up a left hook btw, it's not a strategy in itself and it opens the left hooker up to the southpaw's power punches in the process

Why do you keep calling him Moore?

Moorer has many solid wins (Jirov, Botha, Schulz, Cooper, Stewart), and one great win, no matter the excuses Holyfield may have had

he's about as good as most HW title holders of the 80s
Underrated more than anything. Good technician, tight guard, good inside and out yet powerful. The SHWs and Tyson would have stopped him but he was pretty good.

I think he probably dropped the ball by overlooking an old Foreman, that was meant to be an easy fight for him

i think dempsey would be advised to bring his guard up a bit for a fight with a south paw (like Floyd tends to do with south paws)

Where it's thrown from distance as the first punch and straight (not looped)? He throws it plenty at midrange and inside and its a very good chopping right hand, but that's not what a right hand lead is

He should have been advised to do so against Tunney

I don't think he took Foreman lightly. He fought his usual fight.

Both Roach and Atlas asked him to step to the side and to not stay in front of Holy II and Foreman, but this is something he never did in his whole career, so he got starched. Can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I don't see an overweight film director giving Dempsey too many problems.
