Default Why were Maravillas early years wasted?

If you look at his early record. He pretty much went for 10 years beating up the lowest of the low journey men in Spaina and Argentina, whith a few decent fights thrown in.

The only really high ranked fighter he foughtb early on was Margarito.

I know he had to learn his craft, but the guy was in his 30's fighting guys with a record of 3-35-2 and 1-7-2.

Was it bad management, or could just not catch a break

Well I guess it has something to do with starting boxing at age 20.

It's pretty hard to learn your craft to the fullest if you don't put down enough time.

And I guess he wanted to take it slow to learn it properly and just work things out.
I mean even against a bad opponent like that if you haven't done much boxing it's still a learning experience.
I mean training for the fight, fighting infront of a crowd and so on.

Some of you should use google a bit more.
He started as a poor kid so he had no big time promoter to get him good fights.
He later moved to Spain because the living conditions at home were too bad and there was no money to be made anywhere for him. In Spain he worked as an illegal and called himself "a 1000 euro per fight fighter".

Both GBP and Top Rank turned him down and it was Lou Dibella who picked him up.
DBE got him on HBO and a world title. Now Martinez is a millionaire and one of the best in boxing.

He's probably on of those guys who never had the look of the great early on so no one bothered too much in making his career.

Much like his one time tormentor.

Margo was fed to the wolves and eventually beat the guys he was supposed to lose to.

I think I agree with this. But will add he to learn his craft so when the break came he grabbed it with hands and made the most of it.

He was definitely a late bloomer. I dont put much worth into his early career. we have seen how good he is as he as stepped up.

My point is I think he was that good for a long time. He was just not stepped up.

Im sure when he was 28/29,he could have fought at a world level. It was just he was put in crap fights.

He was a marvel even in the amateur days, he was training alongside some other top level amateurs from Argentina on the Argentine olympic team.

He really emerged and in my opinion first matured in the Bunema fight, thats when I really thought he was making strides. I predicted he'd be hell for Paul Williams when they first met.
