Is it weird I think this is only a 60/40 fight in favor of Vargas? (and the only reason at that is to cover for possible preferential judging...)

I think it's a pretty nice spot for Vargas. Similar matchup to Josesito Lopez, except Lucky Boy is less polished, Vargas is presumably a little bit more polished. If it comes down to class, work rate, or who Top Rank wants, Vargas takes it. And it usually comes down to one of those.

I was actually thinking possibly the other way around.
Josesito showed Jessie to be hittable, and Omotoso has massive power. (bit also a suspect chin and some reckless habits...sort of a welterweight Herbie Hide/Travieso Walker type) |

That was my initial thought. But it seems to me that Omotoso has made it this far by battering fairly week opposition who can't really do anything about it. Even then, it usually takes him a few efforts to finally beat them down.
Not sure Vargas allows this to happen. Manny was saying Josesito was going to do it to him from about the third, but Vargas just knows how to use his skills to keep them away and pile up points. Josesito did seriously threaten him at the end of the 10th, but Josesito is better schooled than Lucky Boy and had been in with significantly better opposition. I think if Lucky Boy turned into Lopez, we'd say he exceeded expectations, yet he'd still probably lose. |
