I suspect that without the retina issue, the size advantage would've appealed heavily to Ray added to the hubris he would've experienced had Pryor made enough noise.
Although in saying that,Ray's confidence would've been well founded at that point, even with the lack of commitment he was showing post-81,so hubris might be the wrong choice of word. But an HBO broadcast with Pryor calling Ray out from the ring would perhaps suggest different.

The sport has gotten so bad, that the "atrocities" committed by SRL - whether real or imagined - are hardly even worth bringing up anymore.

Just got back a while ago, to be honest most of his material was pretty much exactly the same as the talksport interview although he was a really funny guy. I didn't get to ask a question, so not as advertised. A few things that weren't previously said though I think. He also looked amazing for his age and the amount of coke and booze he's put his body through.

The strangest thing was when of the night for the boxing nerd in me was Leonard talking about Benitez. Ray said what a great fighter Benitez was even if 'he didn't beat any of the fab 4'. He said he didn't beat Hagler or Hearns did he, then he asked the audience if Benitez beat Duran? Now Leonard commentated on that fight So he either was so pissed and coked up he forgot all about it or he was fucking with the audience, I'm genuinely not sure as he seemed to think Benitez didn't beat any of the fab 4 allot of the audience were.

When asked about Mayweather facing him he quipped about it not being fair as he already knocked out his daddy and you know they say father like son. When asked about Mayweather facing the fab 4 he seemed objectively dismissive.

With the whole Duran and fighting the wrong fight tactic. He said he had got the idea in his head to go toe-toe early on and he was stubborn on keeping to it, then asking the audience if anyone else was stubborn.

When asked about his greatest personal achievement he said admitting he was an alcoholic and being 7 years clean and sobor. He must have been pissed because last year he claimed it was 5 years.

Enjoyed it but also a little disappointed. I did get my picture taken with him, put our dukes up to pose, which was obviously orgasmatic. The presenter who filtered who could ask Ray questions blanked me as he walked past me asking someone on my table so I then poked his arm to try to get a Q and he still ignored me, the cunt.

The annoying thing was most of the questions were ignorant and/or obnoxious. One of the older blokes came out with 'I know you avoided most of the punchers but I wanted to know who was the biggest puncher you fought out of Hearns, Duran and Hagler' (that's pretty much word for word). Lots of worse questions than that got asked, some of them not questions and just statements, disappointing, I wish I could have interviewed him as I'd love to delve deeper than the obvious superficial caption obvious questions.

He shadow boxed a little while talking about the Hagler fight and I wanted to shout at him to shadow box some more. It's nice watching him throw his punches, so fluid.

A pretty good but not a great night.

At 1 stage the comedian asked the trolls if anyone wanted to step up to spar Leonard. I'd love a light spar with Ray, hell I'd be honoured to get a pasting off him.

I did warn you mate.
It's actually such a waste when you have a legend in the room and people spout shit that is so obvious or has been covered already.
At the MAB one I went to,he covered in detail why Morales was the best puncher he'd faced(volume and the fact the fight was so hard.)
Then,when it went to the audience,the first question from an old guy;
"Tell us Marco, who was the hardest puncher you fought?"

I asked the next question and could see idiots with blank looks on their faces as if to say,"What was that?"

So it was quite satisfying at the end when we went up to see him again and he remembered me from my question.
Then, his interpretor came up to tell me it was a very thoughtful question and Marco appreciated me asking.

The smug look was wiped off my face a few weeks later when Johnny Tapia died.
MAB told me he was doing great and everything would be OK
Apart from the obvious sadness,it does take the shine off my moment a bit.

Just a bit though.

Sorry it wasn't what you hoped for mate.I think these things can be very hit and miss and I felt a bit fleeced when I left about £300 lighter.

that was actually a fair statement Powerpuncher. we sometimes might not like hearing it, but it goes with the territory, especially in Leonard's case

To answer that man's question, out of the few punchers he faced, now he has only three to pick from and one of those was a shot fighter so I guess it boils down to two, Hearns N Duran, unless u want to include Geraldo, lalonde, Howard, Norris, Camacho, all of which had him on the floor but weren't considered punchers

In order: Norris (sharpest) then Hearns, then Duran

Norris also had a much higher % connecting than Tommy, whose arsenal was limited to a one-two combo, most of which Ray easily avoided

What was your Q mate, I'm guessing regarding the health of Tapia? I do love the way the likes of Barrera and Marquez get so technical when analysing their boxing, where as western boxers talk about the sport more emotively. Although he himself said Hamed was the hardest puncher he faced.

It was a nice intro to boxing/Leonard for the girlfriend, when we got there she was asking 'why are all these people here to see this Sugar Ray, I haven't heard of this Ray before or any of these guys he fought' After seeing some Sugar Ray highlights, she was amazed though and she was taken to him as a talker.

Anyway mate we have amateur footage of the show, so I'll have a go at youtubing it if you want a look. Not much more than the talksport interview and from some seats right at the back.

Bradford, Cedar Court, the night after I believe. How did you find it, any extra insights or tales? Charismatic in person isn't he?

He can't be 5'8"...just check out the difference between him and the 5'7" Duran...and he's slightly taller than the 5'9"-ish Benitez. If he said that he must be developing Pugilistica Dementia or something.

It could be both Benitez and Duran's height are also increased, increasing heights is part of the business. I'm 5'11 and he was shorter than me but I was too taken away with it to figure out tall he was.

The ticket in dollars would equate to $105 a piece TT now our British Pound has collapsed. VIPs were a bit more. I have my GF to thank for going as I would never shell that out of my tight fists myself.

I did get allot more excited than I thought I would. Shaking hands and putting the dukes up for a pic, face flushed and giving all kinds of involuntary nutthugger compliments He seemed genuinely friendly guy I have to say.

That's actually a nice price IMO. Ray was doing a booksigning at the Grove in LA and I didn't know until a week prior, and I had already booked tickets back home for mom's fucking birthday I was gutted

I did meet Khan, Mosley, Vince Phillips, James Toney recently in LA.

Khan gave me beer in an elevator at the sunset hotel. No one knew who he was but me and I went bonkers with the nuthugging This was after the Marcos fight so I went full yes man mode on him. He gave me some brew and he went off with his mexican buddy (who was bleeding from the head?) and two blondes

Amir Khan? A good muslim boy like himself shouldn't be drinking beer should he If you genuinely found Amir Khan drinking it's genuinely a funny tail for people of an Islamic background.

I'd love to hear what they said though TT if you have the time to transcribe it mate. Especially James Toney although I'm a curious fan of all of them.

Shane Mosley I met during the LA kings cup run last year. He was in the sports shop and what not and I pretty much gave him a monster hug and told him how big a fan I was, he said he hated hockey but it's great for the town, etc. and I told hima bout Gretzky since I lived where he does and he thought that was cool.

I legit met Amir ..was he drinking though im not. I remember thinking he was huge for being a 140 lb dude. Maybe they wenre't his but he gave me two out of the 6 pack. told him i loved the fight with maidana and he is one of the fastest guys Ive seen, even late on in bouts I remember Gabe montoya trying to hit me up for the story but I told him to sod off because he's been a prick lately.

James Toney I met outside the wild card EARLY in the morning. he was just chilling with a crew, just told him i was a big fan and that i love watching his fights. he asked me how much i weighed and I said around 135, and he said "thats a nice weight...ya look wiry" then he asked if i felt good at it and I said yeah only 6 lbs less than my fighting weight and he said 129 lbs! I have almost a 100 on you boy. then I just shook all their hands and went on running.

I met Vince at the wild card too and I asked him why Tzyu never rematched him and he said because tzyu said the money wasn't right and he'd rather build his brand back up. so I asked him wtf would you go up to fight quartey? and he said because the money WAS right. which was fair enough, we chuckled, talked boxing a bit. his favourite fighter was henry armstrong just because he said he was a workhose and lost early and came back, and he respected that.

Great times.
