Default Emile Griffith v Mike McCallum @154

Griffith held a title, kinda, at this weight, McCallum is regarded as one of the best. Who you got, prime for prime? The Griffith that out-hustled Dick Tiger the first time (151lbs) versus the McCallum that starched Curry (154lbs).

That version of Griffith never gets caught by that shot that ko'ed Curry...and...he outhustles Mike for a decision win.

McCallum, he would control Griffith with his jab on the outside as well as Monzon or Benvenuti did. Griffith has the speed advantage but McCallum is the ultimate neutraliser of speed with his timing and his short sharp punches. I could see him using the distance to make Griffith miss and countering him. McCallum is the much stronger man too, much like Monzon was against Griffith.

Griffith with his speed has more success in the early going, McCallum gradually works him over with jabs and body punches before turning up the heat as he breaks Griffith down to either score a very clear UD or late KO

Meh I ****ed up the poll and voted Griffith

I think early Griffith demonstrated sufficient hand and footspeed for me to think he mainly ditched it rather than didn't have it.

Griffith of Paret I/Ortega I should be fine to win a close and extremely competitive decision.

McCallum. I just think he was better than Griffith at this weight, at essentially everything.

The Paret/Ortega version of Griffith wasn't really the same version we saw at 154, though. And I don't think Griffith presents the same kinds of stylistic issues to McCallum that he did to Tiger.

All fair, within the criteria of the thread. What I'm saying is I don't think this a matchup Griffith always loses.

I would hesitantly pick McCallum to win and not hesitantly pick the over. It'd be a purist's dream interest fight though.

Emile would probably get an undeserved decision.

This is a tough one to analyze...can definitely see solid cases made for both and would not argue the point either way. The Griffith who fought Tiger, surprised me with how well he fought on the inside, but even more the strength he demonstrated against one of the strongest middles in history. Strangely enough, Griffith might force McCallum into more of an outside fight than he would be accustomed to...In the first Monzon fight, Griffith was wrecked by Monzon's right uppercut to the body...In the second fight, Griffith's strength gave Monzon more trouble, and he made an adjustment against that right uppercut by keeping his elbows outside a bit more, to catch those body punches. Kind of discouraged Monzon from throwing that particular punch, hitting Griffith's elbows. Anyway the normal roles might be reversed, with Griffith doing well on the inside, and McCallum doing well with the jab from outside...
Addendum: With that said, Griffith might require a rematch before he could make the necessary adjustments to beat a McCallum?

both top notch fighters, but mccallum has to be one of the most underrated fighters of all time.he desereves to be up there with hagler hearns leonard and duran while griffiths is on a par with wilfred benitez.
benitez on points
