Default How come champions don't do non title fights much anymore?

Guys like Duran and Chavez would have them between most title fights. The old-timers, even more so.

I wish they would, mark time fights like pongsaklek did although his competition was too poor some were debutants
But wladimir against pianteta and mormeck could of been non title fights and tune ups for fights like povetkin and haye

yeah, but while waiting for the big title fights logistics to get ironed out, they could pick up some cigarette and beer money. Also there is something to be said for being active. Gym preparation is great, but gut-check experience is gleaned in the ring.

with the 14 million alphabet soup titles, every promoter wants ta juice the box office by calling it a title fight.

Champs don't fight as often, and it's also a promotional issue. Promoters make the choice to take fewer bigger money fights instead; probably because it's also less work for them as well as trying to play supply/demand to their benefit.

Personally, I think it's a great idea for a relatively unknown champion to go on a barnstorming tour (by modern day standards, I'm realistic here lol) to build up name value cache for himself. Most new beltholders really should be defending at least 3 and preferably more times a year instead of sitting on their titles the minute they win them before they have any name equity built up. To see guys like Cloud, Shumenov, and countless others just not fight for a year here or there once they've got their titles is simply poor business. It lets promoters brag about having champions in the stable without making them work as hard to maximize their fighters' careers.
