Default Calzaghe beat 2 ATGs in their home country.

I mean to go in USA and beat RJJ and Hopkins is something very, very hard to achieve IMO.

Its like Froch would beat Ward and a prime-active Dirrell in USA.

RJJ was shot to **** when Calzaghe beat him.

his wins over Lacey and Kessler were much better then his win over RJJ

Calzaghe was on the verge of retiring circa the Ashira fight! 2 years younger than Roy also...

I love how the yanks give Joe **** yet for years they were hyping Dawson!

Difference between Joe and someone like Dawson was an ageing Calzaghe beat the young lions of his era Kessler, Bika, Lacy etc Dawson has continually been embarrassed by them, Pascal, Ward, Stevenson! He feasted on old men and every time he fought someone his own age he lost!

Credit for the Hopkins win (styles!) but i think old man Johnson beat him first time round also! 4 losses in my book! (He barely beat Diaconu too!)...

Dawson was overrated! Calzaghe is an ATG!

Both, RJJ and Hopkins were still elite fighters at that time. I agree that RJJ was past of his prime but still one of the best fighters at that moment.

Anyway very good wins in USA for mr. Calzaghe.

His win over Hopkins was a very good one, the RJJ victory not so much.

RJJ was well past his prime and knocked out in a couple fights in recent years prior to meeting up with Calzaghe. All he had at that point was his name.

Still, it will go go down in the record books as a landslide victory for Calzaghe over a HOF'er in Roy Jones, but that version of Jones was about 8-9 years well past his prime.

His victories over an undefeated Kessler and a still dangerous fighter in Hopkins were much better victories for Joe C.

^^It would've been an incredible feat if he went to the States and beat up on Roy JOnes in 1998 or 99.

But anybody who actually watched JOnes fight in the 90's would surely know that JOe C. wouldn't stand a chance. I'm not a big fan of either fighter, but if you think Calzaghe would've had a chance in hell to beat the best fighter of the 90's in his prime, than your homerism trumps your actual boxing knowledge.

Still have to give credit where credit is due, he beat Hopkins fair and square, and Bernard had a LOT more left in the tank compared to a completely SHOT RJJ.

Can somebody post the rankings of that time before Calzaghe's fights with RJJ and B-Hop ?

Where RJJ and Hopkins were ranked @ the lhw div. before their fights with Zaghe ?

^The Hopkins win though was a helluva accomplishment. Even with the knockdown in the 1st round, I had Joe C clearly winning that fight by a pretty wide margin and I'm a huge fan of the executioner.

I don't really blame Calzaghe for staying in the UK for so long before he came to the States, rather his management team (Frankie W,) who just tried to milk his cow for as long as possible. It would've been very interesting to see a young, prime Calzaghe take on top-tier competition when he was in his prime.

But kudos to him, he dismantled a young prospect in Lacy, absolutely wiped out a very talented and undefeated fighter in Kessler and beat Hopkins handily at a time when Hopkins still looked very, very good. I just don't give him much credit for the JOnes fight because JOnes had been shot to $hit, especially after that stone cold knockout by the hands of Glen jOhnson. I watched that fight live and really thought he might've died in the ring that night, he was out for a couple minutes.

He should've retired after Tarver knocked him out in their rematch. But Roy kept on going, and it hurt his legacy a bit.

Too bad Joe never had the stones to face the likes of Jones in his prime! Hey he got the win over the corpse of Jones congratulations ! No one with any common sense looks at that win and says yeah that was the best RJJ excepct Calzaghe fans !
