Default Has anyone actually looked at Curtis Stevens? What am I mising here?

This guy lost to Jessie Brinley, who is hardly an elite fighter. He was stopped by Marcos Primera who has lost 27 times, and since his win over Stevens in 2006 has lost 12 straight. That was his only win in 7 years. Since then Curtis has strung a few stoppage wins together over guys who have a combined record of 94(62)-46-17-9. And now because of one round KO over a nobody at NABF level he is supposed to be the 'acid test' for GGG?!

What am I missing here people?

GGG is 31 and his biggest win is Macklin yet he's supposed to be the something unbeatable.

What am I missing.

The fact that he dismanteled 3 though guys with ease in back to back fights.
And Stevens has only boxed 11 rounds in two years.

GGG fought a legit contender in Macklin. Honestly, he would anhiliate Stevens. Keep hyping him but in your heart you know its a laughable matchup. The same poeple are crying 'fight Martinez/Ward' yet they feel Stevens is somehow a viable opponent. Go figure.

He anhiliated Ishida, Proksa, and Rosado as well. None of those guys were anything more than B level fighters. Yet Golovkin still fought them. GGG is scheduled to fight again November 2 in NYC. If you have better ideas for an opponent, throw it out there. Stevens doesn't stand much of a chance, but he's an opponent that will get people interested.

Ishida ex titlist. Proksa beat Sylvester, EBU title. Remember he is still moving up in class and Macklin was a quality foe. If we are going by what the posters above you think is right, then Soto Karas should get a shot at Manny/Floyd next???

before the Macklin fight, it was supposed to be a "test". Macklin got annihilated and suddenly Matty was nothing more as a gatekeeper.
Now Stevens suddenly is supposed to be a test, wich let's face it he isn't.
If that fight happens and GGG levels him inside a couple of rounds then again Golovkin has faced nobody yet.

I'm actually thinking if GGG KO's Maravilla they still will insist he didn't face anyone because Martinez is clearly on the slide.

That's just how things work around here.

Ishida and Proksa never won any real titles. Stevens is current titlist if you want to count any and every trinket that's handed out. Mackling was a quaility foe, but I never mentioned anything about him. As far as Soto Karass, I doubt many people would be interested in either Mayweather or Pacquiao fighting him. Floyd and Manny are at the top of the food chain. They can fight pretty much whoever they want. Golovkin doesn't have as many options. Like I said, if you know of some better options that could be made for November, throw it out there.

I tend to agree with this. There is basically almost no-one at MW who is available or willing to fight GGG in the time frame available - Rubio, Andy Lee, Mora perhaps? Stevens could at least be imagined to have a punchers' chance which is always gonna make the fight exciting. Showtime's a Brooklyn guy as well, so the event at MSG would be pretty special.

Why not make it, specially if there isn't anything else to be made? I know I'd like to see it not least to see how GGG deals with a big puncher. Barring a freak mishap, Stevens has basically no chance of getting the upset yet his highlight reel KOs will make the fight highly anticipated and easy to sell.

The only problem is, there seems to be a degree of reserve from the Stevens camp. I can understand their reticence since Stevens is just starting to make waves at his new weight and a probable loss now would do him no favours in the longer term. I'm just kinda hoping HBO throw enough money at it to make it worthwhile for Curtis.

Macklin v Stevens would be a miss match so god knows what GGG V stephens would be. IF Stevens was a Brit you would say he is at best Euro level a short straight ahead ploder with decent power. GGG beats him anyway he wants to its not even competative. maybe a few fights ago before GGG last few fights but pointless now

Winner of Barker/Geale. Apart from that its slim pickings I agree. Just saying that this Stevens nonsense is a backstep for GGG. He clearly would be stopped early.

The Geale - Barker winner would be the ideal match up, but I think whoever wins will be wanting to hang on to that shiny belt as long as possible, rather than losing it in a coupla months. I hope I'm wrong, but I'll be very surprised if that fight gets made.

Stevens is technically a backwards step in terms of quality, but an easy sell that will impress people with GGGs willingness to take on a 'dangerous' puncher. Those TKO/KO1s really impress folk and the fight will be perceived as far more of a risk for Gena than it actually is. On top of that of course is the fact that there just isn't anyone much better available. I say it's a fight worth making - if Stevens' team want it, of course, which is not looking so likely.

I agree. There's a number of guys I'd rather see Golovkin face instead of Stevens but none seem realistic for an early Nov fight. Possibly the Geale-Barker winner but with them fighting in mid-August and Sturm possibly getting the next shot at the winner I don't know how realistic that one is but if possible thats about the only realistic option that is better than Stevens.

Once you get past the top guys, who all seem unlikely for that date, you start to get to guys like Stevens, Rubio, Lee, Mora, Korobov, etc. Stevens is on par with those guys and then when you add his punching power in he seems to be one of best realistic options out there.
