Default Ranking the soviet fighters (Amateurs)...

Fighters who fought under soviet rule or fought out of former soviet countries. This is just a personal list i have compiled with my own limited knowledge, these are the men who reached the top of the the amateur game but rarely tasted the bright lights of the professional ring:

1. Laszlo Papp (Light middleweight/Middleweight) - The first fighter in Olympic history to win three successive Olympic gold medals.

2. Boris Lagutin (middleweight) -Two time Olympic Champion, Two time European championships winner, six time USSR champion.

3. Jerzy Kulej (Light welterweight) -Two time Olympic Champion and two time European champion. He had a record of 317 wins, 6 draws and 25 losses.

4. Vasy-Valeriy Popenchenko (middleweight) - Olympic champion, two time European champion, six fold USSR champion. (Val Barker winner)

5. Vyacheslav Lemeshev (middleweight) - Olympic Champion and two time European champion. Lemeshev knocked out four of his five opponents to win the gold medal. Beat the likes of American Micheal Spinks.

6. Oleg Saitov (welterweight) -Two time Olympic Champion, World amateur champion and two time European champion. Won the Val Barker trophy at the 2000 Olympics.

7. Vasyl Lomachenko (Featherweight/Lightweight) - Two time olympic champion, two time world amateur champion and european champion. Val barker winner also.

8. Aleksei Tishchenko (Featherweight/Lightweight) - Won two olympic gold medals, also a world amateur champion, european champion & world cup winner.

9. Serafim Todorov (Featherweight/Bantamweight) - Three time world amateur champion, three time Europe champion.

10. Henry Maske (Middleweight/Lightheavyweight) - Olypmic gold medallist, three time world amateur champion, three time Europe champion.

The following all have a case for top 10 also:

-Dan Pozdnjak (light heavy) - Olympic champion, three time Europe champion.

-Shamil Sabirov (Light Flyweight) - Olympic Champion and European champion.

-Gennadiy Shatkov (middleweight) - Olympic Champion and two time European champion.

So many more could be included here, however i hope i have given you a taste of the talent pool that went untapped for so long...
