Default Why does MMA have 265 weight limit?

In boxing the heavyweight division has no weight limit. The minimum (straw weight) weight class has no minimum weight. This is done so that anyone with enough talent can compete no matter what they weigh. Does MMA no wish to allow everyone to compete?? Will MMA never have a Valuev like fighter??

I really am curious. If anyone has some serious input and knowledge I would be very grateful.

I don't know for certain, but they probably choosed that number to avoid too much weight difference in the higher weight class without having to add another weight class.

It actually hurt them that limit on ppv attractions as I agree a 320lb Lesnar would not lose to Velasquez with his hold your man against the cage tactics.

It goes back to the days of when MMA was trying to get government sanctioning so they could get back on PPV. The New Jersey State Athletic Commission insisted on a limit to the heavyweight class so the size disparity would not be too much (206-265). There is actually a Super Heavyweight 265+ Weight Class, but it's never been fully endorsed by any major US promotion. The UFC has had one fight at Super Heavyweight, back at UFC 28 - Josh Barnett vs. Gan McGee.

A quarter ton of fun!

(the knockout comes at 14:00, just basic vanilla boring ground-n-pound; you don't really need to bother watching the entire match...)

Thanks!! That's all I wanted to know. I don't really like mma all that much, but I love machida's stick and move style. If mma gians more fighters like him, it will definitely make me a fan.

Yes indeed, to add onto the above information, as it worked out the INSURANCE companys that the UFC then obtained for liability purposes did not desire to CROSS the rulings of the New Jersey AC as it leaves them WIDER open to appearing negligent.

Mostly all horseshit but whatever.

I think it actually means the big guys train. They already aren't as fit as smaller guys. People like Brock, Carwin, Big Foot etc would just become lumps who are not training hard enough to display their talent. Most of them don't train hard enough as it is.

265 results in heavily built fighters who are nearing 7 foot (Klitchskos, Sylvia etc). Until there are a number of top fighters at 7 foot or above who need an increase then it isn't a talking point.
