I've got news for you Cus... Ali did get back in the ring, Ali did get hit that hard, and he did exactly what he said he would. He stayed away, or tied them up.

He also picked most of the fighters that Ali fought to beat him.

Dempsey was very critical of Louis too. Holmes of Lewis, Tyson and co. A bit of the old green eyed monster me thinks

Most of the opponents Louis ko'd were there for the taking. Just there shoulder to shoulder at close range with no movement - static targets. Ali never fought in any way like that. Poor comparison.

I agree.

It probably upset Ali though.

At this stage Ali was so far behind Louis in historical standing that I doubt Louis would have been threatened by him.

But I'm sure that Louis thought he was getting there.

This is hilarious! I just can't get seriously upset about any of this.

I dont think there was any real threat of that untill the Foreman fight.

It may have had more to do with Ali's style. Louis didn't fight like Ali (fast feet and hands) and the guys he fought who were like that, gave him problems. (Conn, Walcott, Charles. Come to think of it Louis didn't fight too many "slick" boxers during his reign. Please correct me if I'm wrong.) So by picking Ali to lose he was basically saying that his style was better.

Just a thought.

Speculation?

Yes!

You might well be right.

Puchers always seem to rate other punchers while slicksters tend to rate other slicksters. Note Louis's early championing of Liston and Foreman compared to his conservative asesment of Ali. Note also that Joe Walcott was one of the first experts to start talking about Ali as a possible great. Walcott either liked the style due to its similarities to his or saw its potential for the same reason.

I would dispute that Louis fought verry few slick boxers. There were probably more around back then than during Ali's title reign. Louis clearly had some problems with slick movers though there is a bit of a mixed picture there.

He may have done, I'm looking more at after he won the title. Other than the 3 that I mentioned, I don't really see any but I'm not 100% on all of their styles. If you do please let me know who.

The best boxers Louis fought to my mind are:

Bob Pastor
Max Schmeling
John Henry Lewis
Billy Conn
Jersey Joe Walcott

Against Pastor he strugled in the first fight but posted a textbook destruction of a mover in the rematch.

You know the deal with the Schmeling Conn and Walcott fights. He had problems but caught up with them in the end.

The John Henry Lewis and second Schmeling fights dont not tell us much because Louis jumped them early. Wins for sure but they dont say a lot about how he would have done over the long haul.

It is a shame in a way that a prime Louis never fought Walcott because that could have told us a lot about a possible Louis Ali bout.
