Yes and Beterbiev beat Mekhontsev at the 2006 Russian Nationals although Mekhontsev didn't really reach world level until 2008 hadn't quite put it all together yet.

Beterbiev also beat Kovalev at those same Nationals although it was by one or two points and Kovalev claims it was a robbery because of politics. Russian amateur boxing does involve alot of politics especially at that time when Lebziak was coach he was a gigantic SOB who had grudges against certain guys and played favourites with others so what Sergei said is probably true. Artur was a golden boy on that team.

Considering Beterbiev is currently a LHW who fought at 200lb in the amateurs for two years im sure its Artur. P4P not sure probably Artur but Khytrov can really hit too.

Russia have so many good light heavyweights , as well as Kovalev, Mekhonstev, Beterbiev they have Dmitry Sukhotsky, Denis Grachev, Igor Mikhalkin, Medzhid Bektemirov, Umar Salamov, Movsur Yusupov, Vasily Lepikhin, Denis Tsaryuk.

Mikhalkin is european champ, Salamov 10(9)-0-0 looks like one to watch... talented big puncher and just 19 years old . Tsaryk was european junior champion in the amateurs and fought in the WSB, and Yusupov fought in the WSB too.

What are the amateur records of all of those guys?

Then who hits harder, Kovalev or Beterbiev? I say Kovalev, because he's fought at the world level, so his power is proven, while Beterbiev is still a prospect in the pro ranks.

What is with Beterbiev's inactivity? He has not fought in a proverbial coon's age.

He was injured. He should have fought Jeff Lacy.
He'll be back in August.

Mekhonstev beat Gvozdyk twice in the Amateurs....But we all know that the Amateur and Pro game can be completely different.

I would say

1.) Mekhonstev
2.) Beterbiev
3.) Gvozdyk

I saw Beterbiev fight live once (amateur event) as I actually wasn't that impressed....But his other accomplishments trump my 1 fight that I saw him in.....So he goes at number 2...Who knows maybe he just had a bad night when I saw him which can happen to ANYONE....
