Default Concussion from sparring

I've been boxing for 2 months. I've sparred before, but it was light contact. Yesterday at the gym my trainer told me to gear up and said I'd be sparring. I weigh 137, the guy i sparred said he was 165-170. He asked to trainer if it was light contact and the trainer told him to "bang away."

I fought as hard as I could, but he put me down in the first and then after he put me down again in the 2nd my trainer stopped it.

When I got home my head was killing me and I kept throwing up so mom took me to the ER and we found I had a concussion.

First, how often does someone get a concussion from sparring? I was surprised, I didn't think it happened too much. This is the 3rd concussion of my life. Has anyone here had consussions? I don't mind getting a broken nose, busted lip, whatever, but when it comes to my brain I start getting a little concerned.

Second, what do you think of my trainers decision to have me spar him full contact? I know that at a certain point you have to get thrown to the wolves, but for my first time going ful contact to be against a guy 30 lbs heavier and so much more experienced with a few am fights, telling him to bang away, I was surprised. Did you guys get eased into sparring or did they just throw you in like me?

Thanks

The previous concussions must have effected you or damaged you skull. I dont know anyone who has had a serious head injury during sparring tell the lad you fighting to take it easy next time..

Your trainer is a tool. There's no reason you should have been put in with a heavier guy who was told to "bang away". I would find another gym and trainer. As for having 3 concussions at a young age. I would seriously reconsider what your doing. Those will add up and you'll pay for it when your older.

Leave the gym. It is extremely dangerous and irresponsible for your coach to put you in with a supermiddleweight going all out when you have only two months.

What was your opponent's background?

raja...that's what I'm concerned about. I read that once you have a few concussions it gets easier and easier to get them. I'm going to keep boxing, but if i get another one, especially doing somthing like sparring, I'm going to have to re-evaluate what I'm doing. I'm 20, boxing because I love it, I know I won't be able to make it a career, it's not worth long-term damage.

cross trainer...the weird thing is that my gym is normally very careful and safe. I'm just going to go in and sit down with my trainer, tell him I'm a little upset about what happened, and see how it goes. If he gets upset, I'm out of there, I'm not paying to be a guys punching bag.
The guy I sparred is about 19 I think, not sure how long he's been fighting, I don't think its much over a year but if you looked at us both shadow boxing or working the bag you'd immediately see that he's in a totally different class. He's had several amateur fights, don't know exactly how many though.

Thanks for the replies

Your trainer is a piece of shit he should have made the supermiddleweight go all out against you ecspecially since your only 140lbs. Unless you were a better class of fighter and were a experienced boxer not having only been doing it for such a short period of time the trainer should not have told the supermiddle to go all out. Also the guy you sparred is a chump he himself should have taken it easier cause he should know he was in control instead of beating up on you.

Iv not joined a gym yet but all the advice / everything iv read says avoid trainers that do that kinda thing like the plague. Talk to him deffo. And see what he says. If you do join another gym use your own head (pardon the pun) and dont get in the ring if you think its overly dangerous. When i join the gym (this sunday ) and , if they told me to get in and the other guy to bang away id tell him where to go. Sounds like hes just using you to further his am fighter.

Change gym. What a bum your trainer is. I bet your mum wasn't impressed!
Give yourself a couple weeks.
That sort of thing happened to me on a busy day at my gym, so the guy didn't really notice, and I toughed it out.
I had a SPLITTING headache for a good 24 hours.
And threw up straight after.

As already mentioned, your trainer is a moron.

First, if he is going to put you against a guy that much heavier than you, than he must instruct him to take it easy, and if the guy does not take it easy, then the traineer must stop it immediately.

Second, if he is going to allow "full contact" then it must be with someone of similar experience and weight than you. If the guy you are fighting has much less experience than you, then it MIGHT be ok for him to allow the other dude to go "full contact". It depends.

In any event, if you are ever in the situation again where a trainer is telling you to spar against a guy who is much bigger than you, with much more experience, at "full contact", JUST SAY NO! It is your body and brain, and it's your duty to protect it. Don't worry about what the fighter or trainer might think.

Lastly, leave that gym ASAP! Good luck!

To be honest mate if thats the attitude of the trainer then hes a danger to other too. I dont know what other people think but maybe the authorities should be told and maybe they should investigate and if hes found to be neglegent or bad trainer he shouldnt be allowed to. Next time it could be a kid who gets seriously damaged and doesnt get a second chance like youve got now

i kinda had the same thing happen to me bu not as bad as all that, it was my first time i'd spared, he didn't go full steam but when he threw the punches he wasn't pulling. luckly i could move out of the way for most of them but he still got me with a few clean shots.
I know your trainer seems like an ass but he could have just been testing you, to see if you have the heart to stay in the ring. i'm sure that what my trainer was doing seeing if he should spend time traing me or not.
Talk to him and tell him you don't want to make a job out of boxing, and would just like to do a little light sparing. he should understand if he only wants to train people who want to box as a job, find a new gym

he shoulda seen he had heart before he actually got his head beat in. He had heart just by staying in there. If that was the test he shouldav said bang away and waited for his reaction and said that was just a test good lad you didnt shit your pants. Then he shoulda got on with training him not just using him as a punching bag.

What the **** was your trainer thinking?
He put you in the ring with someone more experienced and heavier to spar with you full contact?

That is totally irresponsible behaviour at least and your trainer must not have a clue what he is doing.
If he adviced to have "light sparring" with your opponent and the situation got out of control that's another story!!

You should change gym at once!!

1st concussion 1 month no sparring.
2nd concussion 3 months no sparring.
3rd concussion 6 months-1 year no sparring.
At 4th concussion you should tell boxing bye bye.
I am talking about amateurs.
