This is a hell of a fight and could go either way .. I like Larry but Liston, with that jab and reach could be very tough ...

Liston by decision. Larrys blistering handspeed lumps up more than a few welts on Listons face. Larry scores with his jab, but Listons powerful jab negates Larry's at times. Larry had trouble with good jabbers in his career, and he is facing a man with a 84" telephone pole. Larry's biggest problem in this matchup is his tendency to brawl when hurt. Liston would hurt Larry in this matchup, and Larry's big heart would cause him to punch back. This will get him beat up against Liston. I think Liston lands the more effective punches in the fight, especially with the long clubbing right hand. He puts Larry on the canvas a few times. The bout is fought at a fast pace, and Liston keeps up with Larry the whole way. Larry wins rounds with his hand speed and jab, but it's not enough. Liston by close decision.

For those questioning Listons stamina, watch the film...Liston proved against Machen in 1960 he has the stamina to fight 12 fast paced rounds.

Liston is the stronger man here, with great boxing ability. Just too much of the Big Bear for Larry. No disrespect to Holmes, the man was great.

The more thought I give it Liston is the bigger threat for damage, I dont see Holmes dancing for as long or having the speed like Ali and lacks the power to really discourage Sonny. I can see Sonny hurting Holmes with the long right hand but Larry going back at him. Liston may take the decision in close one but could be a Holmes/Norton type of fight with Sonny bring a little more of Shavers with his right hand

I feel that the people who rate Holmes very highly head to head, often fail to address the question of how he is going to keep away from the best ever finishers, or keep them off him.

That is what it is going to turn on.

I think it's very obtuse to assume that the young strappy version of Holmes could not rip Sonny apart all night. Later versions of Holmes would be much stronger than Liston.
So how is he going to keep Liston away from him?

He isn't in Liston's class for power, and he dosn't realy have any physical advantages over him.

He clearly can't aford to go toe to toe with him.

Yeah I know Mike dropped him, his only canvas KO, but let's be very clear, Liston ain't no Mike Tyson, that's for sure.
Listons reach, strength and boxing ability would be a nightmare for Tyson. Liston would knock Tyson around silly.

Holmes would easily outbox Liston and win by a 13th round TKO

Yes we really do know who was more powerful.
Holmes’s record has many strengths, but the quality of his opposition is not one of them. I cannot see any case for saying that Holmes fought better opponents, and even if I could, it would be ridiculous to assert that Holmes might have hit as hard based on this.
You know whether a fighter is a top end hitter, even if they are fighting tomato cans.

What I do know is that Holmes would use his speed and stick and move Liston all night who wouldn't be able to keep up with him, not even closely. And hell if that phantom punch was even remotely for real then it's no stretch to imagine Liston succumbing there is it. Look how many shots Liston missed against Ali in their first fight too, don't you think it might look something like that? I do, I think the Holmes we're talking about was more serious and focussed than even Ali. If there's one thing Holmes can do better than either Liston or Ali that is jab.
I guess the question that it comes down to is "where does Holmes show that sort of mobility".

If you can point to a fight where he does, your case becomes stronger.

If you can't, then it doesn’t mean that he wouldn't do it against a puncher like Liston, but it entails an assumption to say that he would.

Shavers got destroyed in one round by Jerry Quarry, who Floyd Patterson beat in all but name.

He was comparable to Liston in power, and that is about it.

Except Sonny had much better boxing skills, defense, had a much better chin, far better left jab, and a better left hook.
