You need carbs to fuel high intensity exercise, it's that simple. Without them you'll feel like shit, lose strength power and endurance. Carbs spare protein and you'll just be metabolising lean mass. I'm convinced that boxing coaches are generally the worst athletic coaches out of all sports.

I hear misinformed people say this all the time, and then tell me about their diet being fruits/veggies/lean meats etc.

What most mean by "no carb" is "no grain/bread/pasta" diet. Many people have a sensitivity to those and it can cause bloating.

But, if you are an athlete you NEED carbs. PERIOD!!! Just make sure you are getting them mostly from natural foods and not processed stuff. Stick to things like sweet potatoes to get more carbs in along other other veggies. Fruit right before/after a workout to replenish your glucose stores in the muscles.

As to carb loading the day before. It's bullcrap. If you ingest large amounts of carbs the day before, you will just have a big healthy crap. Your body can't handle it. Carb loading should be done starting a week or two before and slowly adding in more carbs and slightly cutting back on your fats/protein to still keep calories under control.

If you are trying to get down in weight then try to take things slowly. I had to drop 165 lbs to 152 lbs for a tournament in a week and I felt like total crap.

And I'm no expert at this nutrition, but carbs are probably needed to give you more energy. Maybe just control your portion of food and the grams of carbs, fats, and proteins in each meal.

carbs are critical. Just be prudent on what TYPE of carbs.

Sweet potatoes/rice/oatmeal etc. etc. GOOD
Snickers bars, doughnuts: BAD

I remove carbs from my diet on the days I don't train. Well, the bowl of oats, the fruit etc.

I'll just go Paleo on those days. If the intensity is high in a training session, I'll fill up on them. If not, I won't touch them.

I seem to appreciate them more this way.

There's no reason to completely remove carbs at any time.

Trying to go Paleo, but by bit.

I'm just really loading up on the carbs on the days that I train, and cut back on them and replace them with fat on the days that I don't train. Ultimately I want to go full Paleo (I could do with lowering my weight), so this is just a way of getting closer to do it.
