Default Colin Lynes v Gianluca Branco

Colin Lynes makes a mandatory defence of his EBU European Light Welterweight Title against Gianluca Branco in Italy tonight. Will be televised on Sky Sports.

Lynes goes into the fight as the favourite and has been on a run of impressive form and wins but Branco is an experienced operator and Italy is a very tough place to go and get a result - he will get no favours over there.

If the fight was at home (was scheduled for Dagenham twice but ended up getting moved?) I'd fancy his chances a lot more - he has been boxing with confidence and the air of a Champ in recent fights.

The venue makes it a much more difficult assignment. He needs to win the rounds cleanly so the Judges don't have close rounds to call.

What are your thoughts on this one guys?

I think Lynes will have his work cut out here.

Branco is a useful operator, losing only to Arturo Gatti and Miguel Cotto - but there are no eye catching names on his resume.

Lynes has been in top form of late, and will need to be again, as judges on the continent are well known for their..... shall we say strange scoring of fights.

I am going to sit on the fence, for a change.

Those two Branco defeats were away from home - he has never lost in Italy.

Its Lynes first fight abroad but some of his best wins have been in other fighters backyards - against Morrison and Mutley he dominated those fights so I don't think the home crowd will unsettle him so much.

As you say, its the continental judging that may be a problem but hopefully Lynes will do enough to take it out of their hands.

To be fair, all this about fighting in other people's backyards is a little overrated (in terms of crowd etc).

The one issue I have is judging - if Italy is as bad as Germany, it looks like Lynes will have to KO Branco to win a split decision.

Depends on the circumstances - if it is a hostile crowd where the visiting fighter is the underdog taking on a local favourite and wins in good style....

Agree about the judging - don't think Italy is quite as bad as Germany though. Hope not anyway!

Lynes showed in his last fights very good performances, it won´t be easy to beat him for most 140 lbs´er. But Branco´s last fight against the journeyman Salzmann was also very good and solid. It will be close IMO, I see Branco as the 60 % favourite. I hope that the BETTER man wins, not Branco a SD or so just because he fights in Italy, better a fair defeat where he showed heart and class, than a corrupt and scandalous win...

Just out of interest, are you from Italy?

Recall you starting a thread on the brit forum about this match up in the past (think Branco pulled out from a previous date) requesting info about Lynes.

Hope the best man wins!

Pastagate - I like it. My spaghetti bolognese is usually a triumph!

I hope Lynes can pull this off. He deserves a long reign.
