I have to go with Jeff on this one. James was a big and strong man for his day. He was 6'3" and 225 LBS. Although Baer clobbered Primo Carnera who was much larger, " the Ambling Alp " had no where near the strength, athleticism, talent, or guts that Jeffries had. Lou Nova defeated Baer on two occasions, and Braddock made him look bad enough as well. If those guys could do it, then I have no qualms about the " Boiler Maker " brewing up a steam bath for Baer.

Jeffries was a good hitter, and certainly a level above Baer in overall skill - and his skills would certainly translate better in London Prize ring rules. Make no mistake about it though, Baer was durable. If he got stopped it would be after a long war of attrition.

Most likely Jeffries wins a UD

I like Jeffries here, by wide UD. Baer would have that punchers chance (as always), though he'd most likely get outboxed.

Under London Prize Ring Rules, a UD is impossible. It continues until one man cannot "come to scratch" in 30 seconds--essentially until one guy is nearly comatose.

Under such circumstances, Baer's fists, iron chin, and good stamina would be definite assets against Jeffries, but I could see Jeffries clamping onto him inside and beating him to a pulp--plus throwing him to the ground when he got a good hold. Baer's fists would also be in danger of breaking with those wild swings.

Think if it lands on Jeffries jaw though, Baer's fist may break, but Jeffries gets a broken jaw, maybe the side of his face caved in.

I'm picking Baer by KO.

Jeffries has 30 seconds to recover, though...and he took a lot of punishment in the past (including a multi-round pasting from a prime Johnson when he was weight-drained and shot).

LPR bouts were seldom won with single devastating punches.

Johnson has maybe half of Baer's power. A peak Baer was an animal.

Well, certainly not half but Baer's biggest shot is a different prospect when compared to Johnson biggest.

But can Baer get it right? You start firing in big shots like that in this game and you're playing a deadly game. If Baer is looking to use that kind of firepower and misses, Jeffries is inside - "in the office" as far as he is concerned. If he hits, say, an elbow, the top of the skull, he can retire because he'll be broke.

I don't think Baer has the temprament or the accuracy of the strategy for this kind of fight against this kind of opponent.

I think this would probably turn on who ran out of gas first. Which means Jeffries would take it.
