Emeritus champ is like a great champ, like a guy who is recognised as great within the division. Rights? Nothing on paper, I don't think, but a fighter who has this honour bestowed (I think it's only the WBC that does it) will always have the division's respect.

Interim champion is a champion who fights for and defends a title whilst the Champion is out of the game - be that through injury or some other reason (Jimmy Bivins was interim champ when Louis was at war).

The interim champion then fights the champ when the champ returns to the ring - or this is the theory.

But really it's all a big ****ng joke.

Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko are both Emeritus WBC champions. The both retired whilst champions.

Having this title means that if either of them ever want to come out of retirement then they are automatically the mandatory challenger to the title.

This is what Vitali has done and why he has got his shot at Peters.

They don't have to retire as champion, I don't think.

It's just an honourary title, so that shouldn't be neccesary, technically. The recipiant recieves a belt which can be exhibited during exhibitions etc.

And the commitees decision doesn't have to be unanimous - I think they need something like two thirds, which I find a bit dubious.

What the hell is happening in your avatar?

Isn't the emeritius champion almost guarenteed a shot at the title? Like Quitali is the WBC emeritius champion, he's been inactive for years but he's got his shot against Peter.

Emeritus is a title bestowed by the WBC at the discretion of the board.

A guy doesn't have to retire as champion to have the 'privelige' - no doubt the major requirement is to have participated in a fair few WBC title fights and provided them with $$$ - in return you get a right to become mandatory challenger should you come out of retirement, if you wish to invoke the right, that is.

You don't have to be retired either - Bernard Hopkins is an Emeritus, but probably thinks it isn't worth the hassle when all he wants at his age is big money fights, and rightly so for many reasons.
