Default Joe Louis is AWESOME!

Watching him on a highlight reel is like watching Mike Tyson punch opponents out. Louis' opponents must have been scared to death to see that freight train coming at them. Louis is all business, punching from ever angle. Terrifying. AWESOME!

Nice to see you digging into some older stuff. Not sure what that clip showed, but my own personal favorite of his is the Max Baer fight. Watch that triple hook he lands.

As we all know, the old timers were so vastly inferior (modern training techniques 'n whatnot and the sweet science has so "evolved") that it is like a different sport....

Slothrop, there is a big difference between Joe Louis and John L. Sullivan. I don't know to wich old timers you a sarcastically referring. There is a visible difference in the advanced technique of the 1930's and beyond fighter, and the turn of the century fighter.

I do believe that boxing is in a better conditioning era now, but it is declining in technique. Boxing probably started peaking in technical terms around the 1960's. I believe the lack of public interest, and the decline in activity of modern boxers has hampered its technical development.

judging joe louis in his era, he is amazing. truly my favorite heavy of all-time. were he born in 1974 or 84 instead of 1914, he would have probably been a bigger man, but that ability to string punches together and rip heads off would have remained true.

He's a monster, what a puncher. He might be the best puncher i've ever seen at any weight, getting a bit excited there but that Bad Intentions video was something a bit special and he was the most special thing in it.

-I still have issues with his movement and his chin, but Joe is up there with Ali as the best HWs of all time for me...because the man truly dominated, and he was quite possibly the best offensive machine the division was ever blessed with. He'd string stuff like Tyson-Thomas and Lewis-Botha together all the time, one-punch kayo shots but in threes and fours.

I'll never forget the day I saw Louis footage for the first time, about 20 years ago. I bought "The Joe Louis Story" on VHS and got popped it in as soon as I got home.
To be honest, I wasn't sure if the film version could live up to the legend in print. I had been disappointed too many times in the past with other old-timers to take anything for granted, but if anything, Louis actually exceeded my expectations.

He's proof that newer isn't always better.

the thing that impresses me most is his revolutionary style for his time. His skill level was just so far superior to others of his time and before (excluding dempsey) he made them look like bar room fighters.

it seems he should have been fighting 30 years later

Louis was the # 1 Heavyweight ever, the real greatest, the best combo puncher ever and had a lot of 1 shot clean KO's, he also defended vs all sizes, shapes and colors
