Default Greatest African Boxing Champions

Just putting out my list of the 5 greatest boxing champions that were born in Africa. My order of preference:

1) Azumah Nelson
2) **** Tiger
3) Brian Mitchell
4) Ike Quartey
5) Sumbu Kalambay

What fighters would you have on your list?

If I were to extend my list to a top 10 those fighters were definetly going to be on it along with Coetzee or Ncita maybe.

Kalule was a better fighter than Mitchell imo.Just fought better competition and had trouble with weightmaking in his prime, which shortened his career.

technically better across the board, a more skillful boxer-puncher.Not as durable, but he would have feasted on Mitchell's comp.

Africa's tough to do though.A lot of it is personal preference between many fighters with similar acomplishments at the end of the day.

**** Tiger in my mind; got a late start and his record speaks for itself.
A great guy to boot.
Lot's of big wins and efforts.
Going toe to toe with, a then prime, Carter and kicking his ass is just one of many.
R.I.P. Hall of Fame Warrior!!

So does Cerdan, who was born in Algeria. Konadu also warrants a shout, imo.

I actually thought about placing Cerdan in my list, and your correct of his birthplace. But I left him off as I saw him more as a Frenchman born in a French colony to French parents. He fought the majority of his fights in Algeria and Morocco I believe. You, would be correct to include him on a list of African born great fighters.

Stretching this list just for fun I would add in Battling Siki, Vic's brother Willie Toweel, Pierre Fourie, Floyd Robertson and Love Allotey. Oh, and Lotte Mwale was a nice lt heavy.

The most illustrious championship on the continent is the Transvaal Heavyweight belt. Corrie Sanders and Johnny du Plooy deserves mentions.

Battling Siki was quite the character for his time or any other time. I remember watching the Mwale vs Saad Muhammad fight. He pounded Saad for the first couple rounds and then was ko'd hard.

There was already a thread about it, or at least very similar.

Dingaan Thobella should be in the top 10, not that I agree that he is not in the top 5, I just might agree with it.

I think Corrie Sanders could make the top 10 too. In addition to blitzing a prime Wladimir Klitschko while past his own prime and doing it in the best manner anyone ever managed, Sanders also won a 12 rds decision over Ross Puritty and did so without going down at all. He also KOd a still young Johnny DuPlooy, stopped a still young Bert Cooper, and gave a prime Rahman a good scare while past his own prime, same as was the case against Vitali Klitschko.

Lovermore N'Dou is another top 10 African "champion" of all times.
I do not like the regard for belts and words such as champion, which were never really meaningful at least in this sport.

Thulani Malinga may be another.
