He was a World War II veteran and received a purple heart award after being wounded in combat. It was thought his career was over, but he instead came up with an impressive knockout string and had made his way into the top 10 before he was knocked out by Jersey Joe Walcott in 1946. He remained a ranked contender through much of 1947-49 before retiring after a loss to Bob Satterfield in which he was floored four times and suffered a broken rib over 10 brutal rounds.
Gomez was known as a devastating puncher and a fast starter who tore into his opponents from the onset of the fight. However, he was small for a heavyweight and seems to have had a shaky chin, and lost when he stepped up to face top opposition.
