Duran was able to beat Barkley even though he was very old at the time. Perhaps King thought that even an ancient, far past his prime Duran could still beat Joppy.

Avoid being hit ant any cost without risking much in return? Just like Hopkins' hero: Joe Bugner.

Couple that with the fact that Taylor by that time had been fighting at 147 for some time and had to pare down, and you have a horrible mismatch on your hands.
To be fair the fight was booked as a favour for Taylor who needed the money. Whether it did him a favour health wise is like you suggest a completely different matter.

Fair call, Duran/us might have been a victim of his very mystique. Many many people believed Ali was going to come up with yet another miracle and beat Holmes.

Somewhere out there Glen Johnson is shaking his head. Of course he wouldn't have shook it right after fighting Bhop, it was far too sore

Muhammad Ali's fight against Larry Holmes
Larry Holmes' fight against Mike Tyson

Lionel Butler, a guy who fought Lennox Lewis, and I believe upset Tony Tubbs, had a fight a while back in his mid forties and alarmingly obese. It was worrisome that it was licensed.

Jermain Taylor's last fight was a criminal mismatch too. I found it ironic that everyone was lamenting that Taylor was still fighting, while the guy who was matched with had been starched out cold in scary fashion at least a dozen times.

Who is going to turn down fighting a legend. Most guys look for those opportunities their whole career.

Quick stoppage. Duran had him where he wanted him.

Less than a year before Duran had beaten Castro, who himself was only 18 months removed from holding the WBA strap. And within recent memory, he had had good performances against Camacho and Pazienza.

At 5 foot 11, Butler holds 270 quite well.
