the wild swinging powerpuncher vs the bodypunching marathon runner.
cuevas was the bigger hitter.......and palomino was there to be hit!! but carlos had a great chin and if he could get past the first couple of rounds his bodypunching could create big big problems for pipino. i like pipino better, but palominos style might be right to upset cuevas via late stoppage. |

Cuevas by mid round KO. He was one hell of puncher in his prime and doesn't get the respect he deserves because of the Hearns KO.

Cuevas was fun to watch and when in form, he was an excellent fighter. But Palomino although not as exciting was a lot more consistant; and I did not see Palomino knocked out too often...

ranzany was taller and had a good jab so cuevas had to get in close so he really piled on the pressure. campanino looked more like a jr. welterweight and fought totally defensively so cuevas picked his spots. |

Palomino's body work would slow Cuevas down in the second half of the fight and wear his man down and win by late stoppage- behind on the cards, surviving flash knockdown around Round 4.
Result: Carlos TKO 13. |

Palominio had a chin made of Iron. If he fight's Cuevas after Hearns fought him he stops Cuevas in the 13th round. If he fight's him before Hearns did I don't know who wins.

And that's just not one fight in which Cuevas was flattened. I don't show that clip unfairly. Cuevas was flattened a lot. He was easy to hit and he didn't take that great of a shot. Palomino was way tougher. A prime Duran put Palomino through hell, but Palomino took it. Duran bombed Cuevas out of there. Cuevas was an exciting banger, but he is being overrated here. Palomino was just too talented. I pick Palomino by mid-round stoppage (and Carlos wasn't that big of a puncher). Keep in mind that all the while Cuevas held the WBA title, he was really a contender. Palomino was the champion of the world. A defense against Cuevas would have been against a worthy contender, but Palomino would have successfully defended his title. The fight between Palomino and Benitez was damned close. Palomino was an excellent boxer.

i think palimino would just take cuevas' shots and out work him like how ivan robinson did to arturo gatti.
palomino was very well rounded and although i havent seen to much of cuevas (only espana, duran and hearns), i saw palomino being hit by every legal and illegal shot that can be thrown a pretty darn strong fighter in roberto duran and he was there at the end. i think palomino will just take rounds and win a decent decision , but after being dropped at least once i assume. |

Cuevas was one of those fighters who went downhill overnight. You can say the same about Sonny Liston too.
But Cuevas was the true champion as far as I was concerned not Palomino. At the end of the fight you could see that Campanino wasn't just knocked out, he was damaged. Cuevas did that too people. He destroyed everyone, even the great Harold Weston. Clyde Gray went in two. Ranzany in two. Billy Backus in one. Espada in two. The accomplishments of Palomino pale in comparison. |
