Default Hopkins first loss - how did it happen?

I have not seen the fight so I am curious how did it happen.

For some reason I was always assuming Hopkins just lost his debut to someone more experienced, but recently I saw it was also pro debut of his opponent, so Hopkins was the one who was more experienced (he was boxing in prison, and he served some years). Which makes this loss even more puzzling...

Anyone seen this fight?

I have not seen this fight, and its not likely that many people here have. It appears to be a low profile bout between debuting fighters of no real marketability at the time, and who each earned around $350 each for the match, according to notes on boxrec.

As for how it happened, I will speculate that being a majority decision, it might have been a match that could have gone either way, but happened to be in favor of Mitchel, or whatever the other guy's name was. The scores of that fight were like 39-38, 38-37, and 38-38. Additionally, Bernard was not training under the same management that led him to his world championship status, and in fact took about 16 months off after that loss. Therefore, it could be speculated that Hopkins was not quite the force that he would later become....

Alas, haven't been able to find report of that fight. Don't remember Hopkins himself revealing any details either, but at least he never disputed that loss to my knowledge.

I believe the opponent's name was Clinton Mitchell-he was a NY Golden Gloves champ, so he had some amateur pedigree. From everything I have read, it was a close fight. It says alot about Hopkins that he was able to be very competitive with someone who was a pretty good amateur.

Nah, fair decision. Hop had to lose 38 pounds in a month, had a tummy cramp, torn left bicep, flu, broken right hand, bum left knee and had been dropped by his long term girlfriend the morning of the fight.

Apart from that he was absolutely 100% tho

It was at 175 and he didn't fight again for some time, and at 168.

Actually, I think I'll get on the case with this one. BoxinG news or B.Illustrated will be the only two that 'might' have a report as they sometimes featured the bottom of the bill (if this was such). Anyone know what card it featured on?

During one of Hopkins' fights (Bo James maybe? Don't Remember now) commentators mentioned that Hopkins dropped Mitchell 2 times during the fight.

good 2 know but do they know if Hopkins was floored as well during d process and whether he was penalized or whether they were just pushes / stepping on feet / very accurate powerful headbutts / rabbit punches that assisted / caused d KDs ?

No, they just mentioned 2 knockdowns and that's about it.

I would've liked to know more details too.
