Default What was the consensus on Mike Tyson in 86-88?

Mike Tyson ranks as my #1 favourite boxer of all time. But I was born in 1993 & was not even a thought when Mike was running rampant in the late 80s.

What I want to know from the veterans on this page, is: what was the consensus back then on Mike Tyson?

Was there a strong belief bordering on fact, that he would go on and be the best ever heavyweight?

Was he thought invincible?

What would the odds have been on him beating Marciano's record?

We all know things went pear shaped < understatement. But I'd like to hear some of you older guys thoughts. Thanks

I saw him fighting before he became champ. I thought he was good and would go places. I never thought at that time prison would be one of them. I can see why you are a fan, as his earlier period he was exciting, that's for sure. Check out his demolition of Trevor Berbick when he became champ.

Well Tyson was moving up and he beat Berbick, virtually everyone thought he would go on and be either the greatest of all time, or very close to it. For awhile he was thought to be unbeatable and even fighters at the time seems scared to fight him.

Essentially he had an aura of invincibility about him.

That was until he lost the Douglas fight, then it popped. and in hindsight some fighters such as Holyfield may have been able to beat him even prior to that, but the perception at the time was that he was unbeatable.

Yes, he was thought to be invincible. The consensus at the time was that only Mike Tyson could beat Mike Tyson, particularly after the Spinks blowout.

Back then, there was no internet, so things were very different. I was laughed at by most people for my belief that Muhammed Ali would beat Mike Tyson. Astonishingly, even after Douglas beat Mike Tyson by KO, he was still considered invincible by nearly everyone and most thought him still the world champion. It may have been a little different among the hardcore fans, but they really were insignificant to the genereal public opinion. In Australia, i can remember that even by the time of Tyson Holyfield, i was the only person in the hotel, who thought Holyfield would win, and i was laughted at by most who didnt think i was serious. In fact everyone was almost astonished everytime Holyfield survived an onslaught or landed a decent punch. Most people were stunned Holyfield made a fight of it, much less won it.

^ I don't predict outcome of fights very often but I actually picked Holyfield to win this fight. Not because I didn't like Tyson, but because I noticed who he was fighting and the measly number of rounds he had prior to their fight.

The consensus among the public was as the posters above have stated, but the public don't count for much. Those that were deeply into boxing knew he was a loose cannon, who had been protected by Old Tomato and his gofers, and it was just a matter of time before the bubble burst.

And do you remember one of his entourage/circus entertainers in the later years called Steve "crocodile" Fitch??
Talk about hangers-on.

He wasn't seen as invincible at all, infact lots of the people in boxing fancied Spinks to beat Tyson.

Spinks pretty much laid down before the fight even began. I rarely recall one fighter being so scared of another before even getting hit.
