I wouldn't be surprised. So fuckin' glad it never came to fruition, if true.

Sad that he and Mifune fell out for so many years though. They were the greatest director-actor collaborators ever imo: even better than Scorsese/De Niro and probably my joint favourite alongside Herzog/Kinski. Horrible, the shit that's come about Kinski though.
Herzog/Kinski is my fave as well. Had to force myself to watch a few over the last week to make sure I could still be awed and keep that shit outta my head. I've come to the conclusion I can as I always knew Klaus was a mentalist, now I know he was a nasty piece of work as well. Oh, well.

Nah I never got round to watching that.

Who's the guy that did 'Tokyo Drifter' and 'Branded To Kill'? Seijun Suzuki??? Well, I've seen nothing else by him but they are both unique viewing experiences.

I suppose I'm pretty much in the same boat; the bloke was clearly cracked and twisted to fuck. Not that it excuses what he did, but when you read about his early life it was probably enough to make anyone cracked and twisted.

I watched Aguirre again the other day with all of it in mind. It's still an unequivocally brilliant headtripping kaleidoscope of a film with maybe the greatest performance of all time at it's centre. That said, the implied incest in the film sort of takes on an ironic and disturbing edge to me now.

Tokyo Story got voted the greatest film of all time by Halliwell's film guide, and it probably isn't too far from the truth.

I've seen quite a few Ozu films. Most of his best ones except Equinox Flower really.

His style with the static, low angled camera was wonderfully described by the director Masahiro Shinoda, an assistant on some of his films, as the point of view of a tiny deity observing humanity.

The Halliwell's Who's Who in Movies edition awarded Ozu their prestigious rosette for outstanding contribution to cinema 'for demonstrating with consummate skill and great understanding of the human condition that less can mean more'.

They are at that. I haven't seen much else of Suzuki's work but I think a lot of his later stuff got bollocksed up by studio interference.

Kobayashi, Mizoguchi and Shindo are three other great Japanese directors of that age. Produced classics like Ugetsu Monogatari, Onibaba (a deeply strange, disturbing but brilliant film) and Kwaidan. Inagaki too with his Samurai trilogy starring Mifune. It really became a golden age for their cinema after the war.
