Default Bodybuilding among boxers?

Who did it, and on the whole how successful have boxers who weightlifted been?

Frank Bruno was an avid lifted.

Turpin was one of the first lifters in boxing, wasn't he?

I was going to say Weaver, but despite his physique he supposedly never worked out.

Rahman, of course.

wall weight were used years ago and rowing machines for certain muscles,Today it tends to stiffin a fighter and it gives strength but a puncher is a puncher, it also tends to make a fighter tire easier, mainly Heavyweights

It doesn't make you tire, but what happens is a fighter starts spending more time in the weight room than running and boxing, and that's why the muscleheads have poor stamina much of the time.

Marciano threw heavy rocks around and punched underwater, he also had a special 300lb heavy bag made and he ran 10-15 miles a day, the guy was sick but he did not lift weights

I knew someone would expose that statement. Fair Play Bummy. Marciano never lifted weights, just done some heavy duty training, the Old School way!

However i do think that Norton lifted.

I read ages back that rocky did start to do weights, but a guy told him that if he got to muscle bound it would do his boxing no good,so he straight up gave it up there, and did other stuff like the above poster said,he also walked miles to build up stamina.

When the movie Rocky II first appeared in theaters, the film critic Roger Ebert viewed it sitting next to Ali and included Ali's assessment in his (Ebert's) review (Chicago Sun-Times). One of the comments Ebert quoted Ali on was a scene with Stallone lifting weights in preparation for the big rematch. Ali's staement (according to Ebert) was that it was something Stallone did just to heighten the scene in the movie montage and that real boxers don't lift weights because it "tightens up the muscles."

Granted, that's one persons opinion from almost 30 years ago, but Ali never appeared to have lifted weights and he never seemed "tight" in the ring.

That's what people forget about the old-time training methods.

People often think the guys who didn't use barbells, dumbells and weight machines were neglecting strength-building and muscle-building exercises.
Truth is, those old-timers (in this case, anyone pre-late 80s) lived off hard heavy exercises.
Guys like Dempsey, Louis, Baer, Jack Johnson would do ridiculous workouts based on manual labour - carrying slabs, throwing logs, dragging sleds, pulling carts, often using monstrous poundages.

Impressive physiques such as Weaver's though are often just the result of being in shape and being blessed with good genes. That's something very few people can accept.
Some grown men get very jealous knowing that they busted their ass in the gym on heavy weights 3-5 times a week for 10 years to look half as good as a Norton or Bruno, and that those guys might have looked something like that at 18 with very little training.
That's life.

I seem to recall an old interview where Ernie Shavers claimed he lifted weights. He didn't have a bodybuilders physique but was broad and thick as a fireplug. Weightlifting could have been the source of some of his power.

Corbett lifted weights in preparation for his fight with Mitchell under strongman Louis Attila. He believed that it helped his power considerably, and considering that he blew Mitchell out early it's likely.
